Etherton Gallery

As sleek and sophisticated as a Jazz Age joint, perennial winner Etherton brings a big-city cachet to downtown Tucson. Housed upstairs in the historic 1914 Oddfellows Building, the gallery is a former ballroom where dancers once no doubt danced the Lindy. Now, those pale hardwood floors and white walls play host to the best art shows Tucson has to offer. Proprietor Terry Etherton deftly mixes cutting-edge and vintage photography with new painting. Our favorites this year? Alex Webb's stunning full-color border photos, which brought high-art skills to the tragedy of the borderlands. Wayne Martin Belger's intricate hand-made cameras--one was made of a human skull--and the dreamy old-fashioned pictures they took. And Debra Bloomfield's color evocations of the Four Corners landscape.
