Best Dancing in the Streets

The Invisible City

During weekends last fall, NEW ART sent its dancers careening outdoors, on Congress Street and in the Main Library plaza downtown. A team of writers picked by Kore Press followed right behind, crafting texts inspired by the close encounters between dancers and startled pedestrians. Then there were the dancers' interactions with Curt Brill's giant bronze nudes, on display at the plaza at the same time. The improvisations evolved into a full-fledged dance concert, combining movement with spoken word, film and live music, performed on the top floor of a parking garage by the light of the moon on a Sunday evening. The brainchild of Kimi Eisele of NEW ART and Lisa Bowden of Kore Press, the all-women project was a welcome injection of life and art into downtown's spaces.
