Binghampton Cemetery
Chirping birds perched in palo verde trees and well-maintained desert grounds greet visitors to this foothills hideaway, which is the last resting place of hundreds of people. Established in 1899 by Mormon families who farmed along the nearby Rillito Creek, the peaceful location of this all-faiths cemetery provides an ideal setting for appropriate contemplation. Plus, the property's history leads to reflection on the unpredictable happenstance of life. In 1927, influential developer John Murphey wanted to acquire the cemetery to build homes, but instead, the federal government sold the land to the Mormons for $50. As a result, 80 years later, Tucsonans can still experience at least one aspect of life from a time when the city was a much smaller place.
