Best Backpacking Trail

Sabino Canyon (general)

Readers Pick

Two unique books from the same author appeared in 1968. The Man Who Walked Through Time told the story of that author, Welshman Colin Fletcher, who backpacked the entire length of the Grand Canyon alone. The other, The Complete Walker, perhaps singlehandedly kicked off the modern backpacking industry. It became the outdoor set's antidote to the military industrial complex and all it stood for. Fletcher extolled the virtues of solitude and independence on the trail using only what you carried on your back—and the book showed people how to go out and do it. The trails of Sabino Canyon have since been Tucson's perennial favorite backpacking refuge, minutes from our front door, a special place to recharge our batteries and become human again.
