Drama
Resplendent with awful acting, the same story these movies have used since Breakin’ (and, just because, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo), and these-guys-can’t-be-this-desperate casting, Battle of the Year might be the apotheosis of dance battle movies. Even with 3-D, a steady stream of music and singer/beater Chris Brown, it’s very hard for Battle of the Year to capture your interest, even for fleeting moments. Strangely, however, it is not Brown or paycheck-cashing Josh Holloway from Lost who truly stinks up the joint. Josh Peck—the worst thing about the recent, forgettable Red Dawn remake —is now two for two. You know the drill on this movie: A dance team overcomes internal conflict to win the big trophy. The one change is that Holloway plays a busted basketball coach brought in to give the team some of that old Hoosiers-style magic. Works about as well as everything else does.
