This is not an easy movie to watch, and was certainly harder to make (the performances in that regard are amazing). Co-directors/writers Coralie Trinh Thi and Virginie Despentes mix explicit sex with lurid violence and a plot lifted from Thelma and Louise. Manu (Raffaëla Anderson) and Nadine (Karen Lancaume) know abuse--Manu on the streets and Nadine at the hands of a drug-addled beau. Meeting by chance, they take to the road, screw men and kill them. A graphic rape precedes Manu hitting the road, but that is not what mobilizes her--not that, nor Nadine's abuse, nor anything else provides a neat, psychological explanation of the women's largely anti-male rampage. Some say the film is no better than porn. Its poor production values are part of its refusal to "turn on" its audience (as one of the characters tells the other, "We're nuts! Where are the clever lines of dialogue?") Baise-moi is not out to be clever, to please or to explain. It is a flawed, raw film, but articulates almost pure rage--the rage of women with no money, no odds, turning on the power of sex.
