Bad Brad

I've never met Brad Nelson in person, so I can't say I know much about the Pima County Elections Division director.

But there's one thing I do know about him: If I'd done my job like he's done his, my ass would have been fired a long time ago.

Check out Mari Herreras' cover story in this week's issue. It offers a stunning recap of all of the weird goings-on that the elections-integrity crowd has turned up regarding Brad Nelson's Elections Division.

As I have said before, I do not believe the Regional Transportation Authority election of May 2006 was flipped. And I find some people (but not everyone) in the elections-integrity crowd to be exceedingly annoying. (John Brakey once accused me of being unethical and biased, and then hung up on me when I challenged his idiotic assertions. THAT is exceedingly annoying.) But I could hug each and every one of them for the stuff they've uncovered.

Like the fact that Nelson let an employee take home discs with election files on them for no reason whatsoever. And the fact that his office bought a cropscanner--a known election-hacking device that the Elections Division had no business possessing--supposedly just to see how it worked. And the fact that he can't post campaign-finance reports on his Web site in a timely manner.

I could go on and on. Mari does, in fact, in her story.

After reading it, I'm sure you'll be asking yourself the same question that I'm asking myself right now: Why in the hell hasn't Brad Nelson been fired yet?
