B-Sides: Guantanamo Baywatch

Down by the bay

Take a trip to a seaside town and dive into the ocean. Once there, make some friends with some sea creatures and you'll understand the general aural aesthetic that Guantanamo Baywatch has accomplished on its most recent album Darling...It's Too Late. Or better yet, think of Back to the Future's Under the Sea dance and then imagine if everyone there did a grip of psychedelics. Anyway, Guantanamo Baywatch has shown off a range of '50s nostalgia including doo-wop and rockabilly stylings painted on a trippy canvas that doesn't take itself too seriously. In fact, sometimes it's just silly what the band does with goofy sounds, occasionally incorporating sea animal noises on their tracks. However, the level of energy portrayed on the album alludes to a band that you definitely want to see live—and you can.

Darling, it's not too late to see Guantanamo Baywatch at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St., on Tuesday, June 2. The Portland three-piece will be joined by Big Bad and Dirt Friends, beginning at 8 p.m. The show is 21 and over and free to see, so that's reason enough to put your most sea-faring attire on, grab a tropical cocktail and head to the show for some solid dance time.
