Away From Her

Oscar voters need to take note of this poignant gem about love and loss. Julie Christie and Gordon Pinsent star as Fiona and Grant, a married couple of 44 years living in an isolated farmhouse in Canada. They fill their time with skiing and sex. But Fiona gradually starts to experience memory lapses and, ultimately, the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, until it reaches an extreme that forces her to move to an assisted-living facility. There, she befriends a wheelchair-bound mute (Michael Murphy), who becomes the object of Grant’s jealousy, despite his own adulterous past. First-time feature director Sarah Polley adapts Alice Munro’s short story with a skill that surpasses that of many seasoned filmmakers.
