Avenue Montaigne

A tremendously light and fluffy tale of a beautiful young woman (Cécile De France) who becomes involved in the convoluted lives of Paris’ wealthy and artistic. It’s thoroughly enjoyable and nicely scored, and it has a fine performance by Sydney Pollack, but there’s little depth. No matter: If you’re looking for the kind of country-girl-meets-city-life romantic comedy that America produced in abundance in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, this is it, perfectly re-created in modern-day France. Ah, the French: doing what we used to do, if not better than we used to do it, then at least better than we currently do it.
