Antidote to Stupid

Normally, this is a space for happy thoughts. I make exciting announcements or point out really cool articles in the newspaper—stuff like that.

But this week, I can't muster happy thoughts. I am cranky, surly and more than a little grouchy. Why? Well, because stupidity pisses me off, and there's a whole lot of stupidity out there.

First, I am sick of racists and bigots. Anytime Russell Pearce opens his mouth, I die a little inside. (No automatic citizenship for people born in the United States? Really?!) The same thing happens to me every time we have to remove a racist comment from one of our websites. It sucks.

And don't even get me started on the yahoo Republicans running for Congressional District 8. Jay Quick and Jonathan Paton sometimes say intelligent things (although it's disheartening to see Paton veering insanely to the right in an effort to appeal to primary voters), but the others ... egad. In this week's edition of The Skinny, you can read about Jesse Kelly's efforts to paint BP's $20 billion victim fund as a plot by President Obama to destroy the country with liberalism.

Stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

As an antidote to all this idiocy, when I am done writing this Editor's Note, I am going to go back and re-read this week's cover story. At first glance, James Reel's piece is a big bowl of depressing—mental illness, unplanned pregnancy, cancer, etc.—but the story of Carlee Hill, Christopher Johnson and family in the end is ... wonderful.

It's brilliant.

Go read it. Now. It'll help the stupid go away, at least temporarily. I promise.
