Re: “The Border Sheriff

I found Sheriff Estrada's take on the whole situation very realistic. What he is tasked with doing is larger than any one county's responsibility and is a matter of flawed national policy.

The sheriff's first and primary responsibility is the health, safety and welfare of the people, all people and he has done it well. It's interesting to note that when they eliminated the funding available from $250,000 to $40,000 and now to none. The responsibility to detain and process individuals did not end, they have in fact increased.

Being sheriff requires an incredible amount of time management and fiscal skills to be a good prudent steward of the taxpayer trust and balancing the needs of public safety within reason. With violent crime being a first priority.

I am amazed that Sheriff Estrada has been able to do as well as he has given all the budget cuts, not only to the States Criminal Assistance Program fund, but also the budget cuts visited on him by the state and county government which always seems to be recurring. All this while the county's population keeps increasing.

The matter transcends just stereotyping people and a geographic area. For a true remedy to this multifaceted problem, a rethinking of the policy guiding border issues and funding will be necessary. More importantly, border sheriff's will have to be co-opted into the dialogue at the federal level.
