After the Wedding

A very plot-heavy and intensely emotional film that should reduce most audience members to quivering puddles of tears. Director Susanne Bier uses expert handheld camera work to tell the story of an angry Danish man (Mads Mikkelsen) who works in an orphanage in Bombay, India. On a trip to Denmark to gather funds, he finds the woman who left him 20 years earlier, along with the possibility of caring about people who aren’t on the list of politically approved victims. The acting, pacing and composition of every shot make After the Wedding a rare treat, and if it weren’t for The Lives of Others, this film would probably have taken the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film last year.
