Re: “Hard Lessons

Excellent article. However, what is extremely crucial to explore is how teachers don't live in a vacuum; although we feel like we do because the responsibilities of a compassionate teacher-like our summer monsoon thunderstorm winds-are just so overwhelming. As working class people-who happen to be among the most highly educated of all professionals-we must also contend with the health care crisis. I know firsthand that the so-called "pay raise" from the Red for Ed movement has been totally erased by my having to pay escalating health care insurance "deductibles." These "health insurance co-payments" have actually set me back in terms of annual salary! So the AZ state government along with their collaborating, self-serving local school administrators (whom often "make" from 80, 90, to 100 K+ a year) have effectively employed "smoke and mirror" tactics to take money from my left pocket, and tout how much they are putting into my back pocket, all the while taking even more from my right pocket! It's a classic "shakedown"; a game of give and take, with most politicians and their corporate puppet-masters, and Pontius Pilate "there's nothing I can do about it-it is government policy" administrators taking, and all the rest of us giving. The most profound tragedy is that poor hungry children in Arizona are compelled to eat the rotten fruit of our cynical, corrupt and criminal political and economic system. It is a slithering, embracing old vine-of-a system that is smothering and choking the life out of our public schools. It is an evil and reactionary killer-weed; the seed of which is a culture that rewards glorified selfishness and corporate/capitalist greed.

Re: “TUSD Teacher Dustin Williams is Well on His Way to Make the Ballot for Pima County Superintendent of Schools

Who is this guy?
How long has he been in the classroom and really fought hard in the trenches for public education?
I know Michael Gordy has fought for decades. If you want my vote, you must have had paid some serious dues...both on the picket line and in the classroom.

Re: “Bus Strike Day 22: Teamsters Reject Latest Sun Tran Proposal, Wonder When City Will Intervene

The Democrats at the city level are showing their true colors; a party of big business just like the Republicans. What really pisses me off as a rank and file member of the AFL-CIO is witnessing for decades how we in organized labor bust our asses to get these Democrats elected only to see them refuse to support us when the shit hits the fan, such as this strike. We need an Independent Labor /Working people's Party and Independent candidates that will really fight in the halls of government for the workers and people of Tucson. Shame on Mayor Rothschild and the Tucson City Council for washing their hands of this historic strike courageously led by our brothers and sisters of the Teamsters Union!

Re: “Barrio Hollywood: If You Don't Live in the Barrio, You're Not Allowed to Vote in Our Neighborhood Association

God forbid that west side residents exercise their First Ammendent right to criticize A FEW businesses.
Dear "Reality," stop being a hypocrite, grow a backbone and tell the world who you are! Do businesses walk on water? Wouldn't any smart business owner want to hear from his/her customer base and "target-market?" People-human beings-are the most important capital. What is wrong with the democratic concept of "one person, one vote," and allowing residents of a particular neighborhood to vote en masse to determine their own destiny? Barrio Hollywood Neighborhood Association belongs to its residents.
Business owners in Barrio Hollywood should organize their own Merchant's Alliance.

Re: “Zona Politics: Cheryl Cage and Bill Beard

Why aren't there more "Independent" voices ( not Dem. not Rep.,) on this show? There are thousands of registered Independents in AZ. These two mouthpieces don't really reflect the depth, complexity and range of politics in Tucson and southern AZ. Time to stop the apathy rooted in the blah, blah, of the power structure. Jim, show some political guts. Maybe with some genuine independent grass-roots voices and views, people will actually start watching!

Re: “Congressman Grijalva Sends Another Letter to DHS: Stop Detaining Immigrant Mothers, Children

Good statement. We need to think of families and children. Politics needs to be put aside, so that we can fulfill our nation's' mission and promise.
