I don't judge music based on the gender of the artist. In fact, the thought never crossed my mind until you brought it up. But since we're in agreement that at least half of the 14 releases I mentioned have female contributors, I would say that the idea of "making a special effort" is sexist in itself, and perhaps one of us has internalized the very real issue of societal sexism more than the other.
Rachel, I completely agree with your point - but don't forget that LAMBMUNKZink, Ex-Cowboy, Kid Puto, Some of Them Are Old, and both Algae & Tentacles and Katterwaul from the Dune Drift compilation all feature indispensable contributions from female artists (or are fronted by women), not to mention Simone Stopford of Burning Palms.
Mr. Butler and Mr. Nicholls, had I known that being "dedicated," "kind," "doing the things they love," and driving for hours are attributes that entitle an artist to a positive review, I wouldn't have come to see the show and critique the actual music. But if that's the case, then every band is incredible and above criticism. And if everything is amazing, then everyone is lying: Is this what you would have preferred?
Mr. James, while you are understandably unfamiliar with my live reviews in this newspaper in regards to my "favoring" local bands (which is false), I admire and agree with your decision to not let this review affect you and your music; your dedication to your music would be questionable if you did.
