And btw, I wish we could have a Sheriff like Clarence Dupnik who tells it like it is and does what's best for his constituents and his community. One of the biggest drawbacks of living in Las Vegas is having to deal with what outsiders may call "corruption"... But what we regularly refer to as "juice". Where else could a County Sheriff get away with so much crime AND so many innocent bystanders being shot to death under his watch?
Thank you, Mr. Danehy, for saying what needed to be said.
And for all the "tea party" folks trolling around here, let me say this. I've moved to Las Vegas in 2009, and I was here in Southern Nevada for all the madness of the last election. I heard folks saying they wanted Harry Reid DEAD. I got Facebook updates from friends who were nearly run over by an angry Sharron Angle fan in a pickup truck outside a "candidate forum" (the same one where the infamous brawl would later break out INSIDE). I was at health care town halls where a few agitators were ready to stir something up. And I was there in Searchlight last March... And while (thankfully) I saw no violence break out, that was largely due to the heightened police presence, and the rhetoric coming out of the "tea party" there was disturbing enough.
Look, I have plenty of respect for my Republican friends and family. I have nothing against conservatives looking for rational discussion. However, the "tea party movement" has yet to prove to me that they want any sort of rational policy discussion. And yes, when Sarah Palin tells people, "Don't Retreat, RELOAD!", when Sharron Angle talks about "Second Amendment Remedies" and "take Harry Reid out", and when Glenn Beck keeps ratcheting up the conspiracy nonsense and talks regularly of "revolution" and "rebellion", there will be violence. And while I won't accuse Angle, Beck, or Palin of conspiracy to commit murder here, it just doesn't help when they and others help create this climate of unfettered hate and rage that allows for mentally disturbed people like Jared Loughner to justify violence.
I'm new, and I've really appreciated your coverage here. And I understand what you're going through, as I've been putting everything else on hold to blog updates and insight on this tragic event.
So you got me hooked now, and I'm looking forward to reading you regularly... From my "undisclosed location" just outside Fabulous Las Vegas.
