Re: “Danehy

I joined the Army in 1963, following in the footsteps of another friend from the year before. Like him, I chose my specialty in the Army Security Agency. After 8 weeks basic training at Fort Ord, California I went ahead to my next assignment and a 26-week class at Fort Devens, Massachusetts at Cryptanalysis school.

From there to a special operations class at the National Security Agency in Maryland for one month and subsequent assignment to a duty station (Tuslog Det4) for a year in Sinop, Turkey.

After that I was assigned for a two-year duty in Japan at a station (Hakata Administration Annex) in the southern island of Kyushu. I was out of the Army in 1967 and was never deployed to Vietnam.

Although I'm a Vietnam-Era Veteran, I have absolutely no regrets that I was never stationed in Vietnam.

@Rick Spanier; heliotaxis. So, where or where do you get your connection for high-speed internet? I cut my cable channel years ago, but I'm still tied to Comcast (aka Xfiniti) for my high-speed internet. It's hard to escape the corporate masters here in Tucson....

Re: “Afternoon Cartoon: Pick Your Epidemic

@Charlie McDonald - Thanks for that information. It definitely shows that Attorney General Barr's position that he can't release the entire Mueller report to the Congress due to the confidentially of the Grand Jury investigations stands on very shaky legal ground!

Re: “Arizona Women’s Basketball Heads to WNIT Finals After 59-53 Win Over TCU

Glad to see the UofA Women's basketball program finally getting some recognition! I've attended games in the past with my daughter and her maternal grandmother. There were hardly any people in the stands during the games at that time.

Re: “Pima County Road Bonds Failing in Early Returns While Park Bonds Are Headed To Passage

Fortunately, led by stalwart Pima County Supervisor Ally Miller, the forces against passage of the Pima County road bonds have succeeded! Now, all those who voted against the road bonds will quit bellyaching about the condition of the roads in Pima County, and will instead organize giant cookie sales to pay for road construction and maintenance!

Look for it!

Re: “Danehy

I once knew Jonathan Hoffman pretty well when we were both working at the IBM plant in Tucson. He took the "buyout" when IBM offered that to many of their employees in 1988. I always got along well with Jonathan and thought he was a good guy.

Obviously, in the years that have passed since that time, Jonathan has become something of a local champion for conservative politics in Arizona. Unlike one of the previous commenters, I still have my subscription for the Arizona Daily Star. Under the auspices of the Editorial Page Editor, Sarah Gassen, the ADS has added some conservatives to their roster of weekly opinion page columnists including Jonathan Hoffman.

I virtually never agree with Jonathan's columns, but if he provides some different perspectives for readers of the Arizona Daily Star I'm not adverse to his inclusion. In the final analysis the press is not, as Trump often has stated, "The Enemy of the People", it is an institution that truly merits its description as the "Fourth Estate". Democracy will truly whither and die if it passes here in this country.

Re: “But It’s A Dry Rub

I was there on Friday having lunch with my grandson. It was the first time I'd eaten there, and I had a barbeque brisket sandwich. Very good, nice to have a choice for barbeque in a town that isn't really well known for its barbeque!
