FEMININE TOUCH
On Friday, July 31, The Rock (136 N. Park Ave.) is going to be taken over by the talented women in both the music and comedy worlds here in Tucson. The Artsy Fartsy Females showcase will feature six local bands and several more local comedians, including Sunset Red (playing acoustic), The Rifle, PIPELiGHTS, Brooke Hartnett and the Female StoryTellers—just to name a few.
The event kicks off at 4 p.m. with drink specials, local vendors and artists and the Bona-Fide Barbecue Co. truck serving up BBQ and vegetarian fare alike. The event is $8 for a full night of storytelling, both musically and comedically, from female voices. All ages and both genders are welcome and, hey—speaking of which, can't wait for the male talent showcase that I assume exists and will happen in the near future.
CAUSE FOR ACTION
Capitan Eric Cline served Tucson as the Rural Metro Fire Captain until a brain aneurysm and a stroke pulled him away from duty. Now Cline is in the hospital and recovering, but he and his family need a little help from us now. On Saturday, Aug. 1, head over to The Flycatcher (340 E. Sixth St.) for a night celebrating the life, recovery and service of Cline with live local music and more. The night's line-up includes vintage indie duo Head Over Heart, La Cerca, Clay Dudash, Macho B and DJ Butta Fly, as well as the AZ Fire Service Pipe Band and the OFFA/RMFD Honor Guard.
Cline's benefit celebration kicks off at 8 p.m. with doors at 7 p.m. There is a suggested minimum donation of $5 at the door and all of the proceeds from the show will go to Captain Eric Cline and his family.
IT TAKES TWO
Brandon Asraf and John Tacon form the pretty impressive pair known as Brick + Mortar. With Asraf singing and playing guitar or bass (song depending) and Tacon singing, sampling and drumming alongside him, the men manage to get a full sound between just the two of them. High energy, sunny and catchy as all get out, the music is the sort of thing that hooks you in instantly and keeps you coming back. With a new EP released recently called Dropped. Brick + Mortar are touring across the country promoting the release and that tour is bringing them to Club Congress (311 E. Congress St.) on Sunday, Aug. 2.
Brick + Mortar won't be going it alone, though. Joined by local indie darlings Asian Fred and Sun Bones, you'll want to hit up this all ages show early to catch it all. Doors are at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10. You can buy those in advance and find more information on Club Congress events at
