Mariachi Madness

If there's one thing you do this weekend, please ... please for the love of Tucson, education and all things mariachi, get down to El Casino Ballroom, 427 E. 26th St., South Tucson, Saturday, June 27, 2 p.m. to midnight. On stage will be Tucson mariachis, folklórico, norteno, Latino pop and Tajano all to help raise funds for Daniel Buckley's documentary, The Mariachi Miracle. The film and book project traces the impact Tucson youth mariachi and folklórico programs have had on the city and across the country. Admission is $10 to experience Mariachi Luz de Luna, Vox Urbana, Tejano star Joe Ahumada's new band Latin Society, Conjunto Bravo, plus an all-star lineup of the youth mariachi and folklórico groups. Buckley, who worked as a music writer for the Tucson Citizen for more than 30 years, has been a huge supporter of the Tucson Latino community and its music scene. Besides a day and evening of music, there will be a raffle, silent auction and merch for sale. Wavelab Studio's Craig Shumacher will be recording the event, with plans to release a fundraising CD for the film. A GoFundMe crowd funding effort will be launched shortly, along with other fund raising activities. Thinking dinner, too? Mariachi Aztlan parents are doing a $5 spaghetti dinner.
