If you're looking to brush up on some John Dillinger history before Dillinger Days kicks off this weekend at Hotel Congress, head to Screening Room on Thursday, Jan. 22 for special screenings of "Public Enemies." The 2009 film features Johnny Depp as the impossibly better looking version of the 1930s gangster on the run from the law. Best of all, the movie features Dillinger's arrest in the Old Pueblo. TRAVEL BACK TO ZUBROWKA
It seems that, while we all know the trademark visuals and feeling of a Wes Anderson movie and love to parody and poke fun at it, we still can't get enough of the meticulous set design, vibrant color schemes, and awkward interpersonal relations he builds. Case in point: his latest flick "The Grand Budapest Hotel" was nominated for 11 BAFTA Awards, won Best Picture for a musical or comedy at the Golden Globes, and is nominated for nine Academy Awards. SHAKESPEARE FOR KIDS
What happens when you take George Lucas' studio and combine that with the premise of a Shakespearean play? Well, we don't really know, but we're excited to find out when "Strange Magic" opens for wide release on Friday, Jan. 23. The 3D computer animated movie is technically a kid's flick, but we have a feeling Lucasfilms will make this "A Midsummer Night's Dream" adaptation entertaining enough for all ages. With the celebrity voice talents of Alan Cumming, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Chenoweth, and Alfred Molina and with a soundtrack based on "American Graffiti," we're guessing the movie will feature some infectiously catchy tunes as well. You can catch the movie at your favorite Harkins or Century or AMC movie theatre.
LONG FORMAT FIREFLY
Look, we all wish Joss Whedon's "Firefly" didn't get cancelled, but it did. Instead of being sad about it and going on a dangerous Netflix bender all alone at home, why not head to The Loft and join other "Firefly" fanatics for a screening of "Serenity"? That way you can follow all of River and Mal's exploits among your peers. The action-packed sci-fi western is two hours of nerdy film goodness that seeks to resolve some of those burning questions after the "Firefly" TV series abruptly ended. It might be a little hard to follow if you haven't seen the show at all, but Whedon's unique genre-bending story with strong female leads is still worth a watch. "Serenity" screens Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24 at The Loft.
DEBONAIR DEPP
You know it's a good week when you have the chance to catch two Johnny Depp movies, and, after seeing "Public Enemies" on Jan. 22, you can see "Mortdecai" at your favorite movie house beginning Friday, Jan. 23. The film follows Depp as the title character who is a goofy art dealer on a mission to recover a stolen painting. Depp is joined by Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Goldblum, and Paul Bettany.
