THESE EYES ARE LIES
Director Tim Burton seems to have decided to step out of his weird, gothy comfort zone. While the Hot Topic kids must be bummed, the film, starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, is a welcome departure for almost everyone else. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm excited to see his new movie Big Eyes. The story follows the true story of artist Margaret Keane, her unique painting style, and the husband who stole credit for all of it. Normally Christoph Waltz's German accent, grey coiffed hair, and charismatic, yet humble air makes me swoon, but I have a feeling his portrayal of noted liar and all-around jerk Walter Keane is going to kind of ruin that for me. At least there's a Danny Elfman score accompanying the film that will surely make me feel better. Anyhow, Big Eyes opens nationwide on Christmas Day-- Thursday, Dec. 25. NO TV AND NO BEER MAKES HOMER SOMETHING SOMETHING
There are people who think Stanley Kubrick's movie masterpiece The Shining is the best horror film in history and then there are people who are wrong. With a deranged performance from Jack Nicholson, lots of weird ghost stuff, and a couple of clairvoyants all set in the nearly empty Stanley Hotel in the dead of winter, the film is deeply unsettling—portraying the isolation motif expertly. Plus, if you had to spend another Christmas locked up with your crazy family, you might be in the mood for elevators full of blood and ax wielding psychopaths. No? Just me? Whatever. Just check out The Shining at The Loft on Friday, Dec. 26 and Saturday, Dec. 27, both at 10 p.m. Tickets can be bought in advance online at www.theloftcinema.com for $6.
REPLICANT REPLAY
Chances are you're as anxiously awaiting Blade Runner's sequel as I am—after all, it's been over 30 years since Ridley Scott made the first film. Recently, Scott even told MTV News that Harrison Ford read the script to the sequel and immediately signed on saying it was the "best thing he's ever read." Since Scott's also working on an Alien prequel/Prometheus sequel, we might all have to wait a while for Blade Runner 2. In fact, it might just be perfect to release the new film in November 2019—the exact month in which the first film was set. However, while we wait, we can relive the first installment of the dystopian sci-fi thriller on the big screen at The Loft on Tuesday, Dec. 30. For fans of neo-noir, Blade Runner is it and getting to see the director's cut in 35 mm print format is pretty cool if you ask me. Get your tickets at www.theloftcinema.com.
FOUR HOURS LATER
Head over to Antigone Books or The Loft Cinema and pick up a copy of Margaret Mitchell's civil war epic Gone With the Wind. After you've read it, watch it at The Loft on Sunday, Dec. 28 starting at 12 p.m. Book buyers get 10% off admission and the ability to loudly remark about how the book is better than the movie throughout the showing. If you're not willing to invest more than four hours on GWTW, though, you can just buy a full priced ticket for $8. It's actually a deal if you consider that its $2 per hour of movie.
