Bad Day to Be a Cow
Wednesday, May 28, is National Burger Day and local restaurants are jumping on the celebration bandwagon. Zinburger, 6390 E. Grant Road and 1865 E. River Road, will feature a "Beef and Brie" burger with truffled aioli. And 47 Scott, 47 N. Scott Ave., is running a special with beer or wine half off when you order a burger on Wednesday. McMahon's, 2959 N. Swan Road, will feature "The Burger," its ground steak rendition of the classic, for $5 all day long.
Road Trippin' and Lobsterin'
The ever-so-delicious summer "road trip" at Kingfisher is upon us again. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Kingfisher, 2564 E. Grant Road, changes its menu during the summer to reflect the tastes of various regions of the U.S. The 2014 road trip kicks off Friday, May 23, highlighting the cuisine of California and Hawaii. Check kingfishertucson.com for updates. Kingfisher's sister restaurant, Bluefin, 7053 N. Oracle Road, is also starting a summer promotion Friday with Lobsterfest. You get a 1-pound lobster with coleslaw, Tex-Mex rice and melted butter for $20.14 (you can have your lobster removed from the shell for another two bucks). And $1 from the sale of each deshelled lobster throughout the summer will be donated to the Community Food Bank.
May, Partners Go Mobile
Be on the lookout for a new food truck called Street Kitchen to hit the T-U-C soon. The new vehicle venture is the brainchild of mother-and-son duo Anna Alonso and Ernesto Carrizoza, who are teaming up with Aaron May of May's Counter and Heist fame. I am told the truck will feature one of my all-time favorites, al pastor tacos, plus "original recipe" burritos and May's rotating menu of international street foods.
Lotsa Meals on Wheels
The Food Truck Rally—Tucson debuts Saturday, May 24, in the parking lot of Big Lots, 7025 E. Tanque Verde Road. Some of Tucson's most popular food trucks will be on hand, including Cheesy Rider, Sweet Delights and Ahiska (Turkish food), to promote "Food Trucks With a Cause." The trucks are raising money for rescue animals and the like, with a portion of this week's event going to Food For Horses. There will be entertainment as well, including a live DJ, a petting zoo, face painting and balloon animals. For more information, visit foodtruckrallytucson.com.
