Fire in the Hole

The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 479 annual Chili Cook Off runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1, at El Presidio Park, 160 W. Alameda St. Firefighters from across Pima County will mix up their versions of chili, ranging from veggie to superhot. The event features more than 30 booths, each decorated in a different theme. Judges will pick out the top chilis and booths. However, everyone wins by attending this food-, drink- and funfest for charity. All proceeds benefit the Tucson Firefighters Association's Adopt-A-Family program. For more information, visit

Halloween Happenings

The culmination of Hotel Congress' weeklong Halloween party starts at 9 p.m., tonight, Oct. 31, with the Opti Club at Club Congress hosting Werewolf Bar Mitzvah! ($5; 21+). The event features two costume contests and live music. More info is at

The Music Box Lounge, 6951 E. 22nd St., will feature DJ AJ spinning your favorite spooky tunes starting at 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1. The no-cover event features a costume contest with cash prizes and drink specials all evening.

Custom Sweets

Lena's Custom Desserts is holding a grand opening Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the former Mamma Llamas Empanadas space at 2418 N. Craycroft Road. Lena's will offer just about anything your sweet tooth may desire, including one-of-a-kind cakes, pastries, cupcakes, cheesecakes, tarts and tortes as well as some sweet and savory empanadas.
