Gabby's New Gun-Violence Ad

Americans for Responsible Solutions, the new political-action committee formed by Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly, has unveiled a new television ad.

Giffords and Kelly will be guests of Congressman Ron Barber and Sen. John McCain at tomorrow night's State of the Union address.

TW spoke with Mark Kelly about Americans for Responsible Solutions last month.

Here's the press release on the ad:

Americans For Responsible Solutions, the new national organization founded by Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, will today release a new ad, titled “Let’s Get This Done”, which will air this week on television and online in a significant, six-figure buy in multiple markets throughout the country, including adjacent to the President’s much-anticipated State of the Union Address.

In the ad, Giffords, with Kelly, speaks directly to camera, interspersed with images of places like Aurora, CO, Newtown, CT, Tucson, AZ, and Oak Creek, WI in the wake of mass shootings. Giffords says:

“We have a problem. Where we shop; where we pray; where our children go to school. But there are solutions we can agree on, even gun owners like us. Take it from me: Congress must act. Let’s get this done. “ Watch the ad here: http://bit.ly/12kU2rJ

The ad notes that 9 out of 10 Americans support universal background checks, a key legislative action that would ensure criminals and the dangerously mentally ill cannot continue to buy weapons at gun shows or in private sales, and would not infringe on second amendment rights.

The ad will air in the districts and states of Congressional leaders throughout the country, including Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, Cincinnati, OH, Louisville, KY, and Las Vegas, NV. The ad will air on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN.

The television presence will be augmented by an aggressive and strategic online buy, including a heavy Facebook and search presence during the SOTU, as well as on other sites throughout the week, and an extensive use of mobile pre-roll video.

In the month since Giffords and Kelly launched Americans for Responsible Solutions, more than 100,000 supporters have joined the organization’s efforts to prevent gun violence and achieve sensible gun policies that protect our second amendment rights. During this time, with no paid advertising or acquisition, over $1.5m was donated online , with an average contribution of less than $75. From all over the country, Americans eager to have their voices be heard are joining Mark and Gabby to counterbalance the powerful gun lobby and to make sure Congress gets this done.

Americans for Responsible Solutions also rolled out a new website, http://americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/, which will serve as a hub for the powerful community coming together with Gabby and Mark. The new website will allow users to learn what’s at stake, cut through the noise to find out what responsible solutions should be adopted, and keep track of progress. Supporters will ultimately be able to use the site to organize in their communities and beyond, including working with local elected officials.

In Washington, Giffords and Kelly will attend a young professionals fundraiser in the early evening before the SOTU address on Tuesday.
