Nine Questions

Emilie Marchand

If you have any interest in any arts-related activities in downtown Tucson, chances are you've had an encounter with the lovely Emilie Marchand. The onetime frontwoman for two sadly defunct bands—The Fashionistas and Pearl Handled Pistol—Marchand currently sings and performs as Lola Torch with Black Cherry Burlesque. You can find her most days behind the counter (or a sewing machine) at the Fourth Avenue vintage boutique Preen, which she co-owns.

What was the first concert you ever saw?

The first concert that I remember seeing without parental guidance was Sinead O'Connor during her I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got tour.

What are you listening to these days?

Beach House, Zola Jesus, Alice in Chains, The Mamas and the Papas, Kanye West, The Exciters, Anita Tijoux, The Besnard Lakes, Fever Ray, T. Rex, Deerhunter and everything else.

What was the first album you owned?

Hmm ... probably Michael Jackson's Thriller.

What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?

Some people seem to like Tech N9ne. I really don't.

What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?

At the moment, I would love to see Zola Jesus and Fever Ray. It would have been sweet to see Billie Holiday at Carnegie Hall.

Musically speaking, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?

I have only pleasure and no guilt.

What song would you like to have played at your funeral?

What band or artist changed your life, and how?

Every time I hear anything innovative and inspiring, it changes my life. For good.

Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?

I always thought that my answer to this question should be Joni Mitchell's Blue, because at one time I owned it on cassette, vinyl and CD. So I guess I'll stick with that.
