When discussing this six-song 7" from local pop-punksters Monster Pussy, "serious-minded" might be the last descriptor you'd pick. While the band's sound is reminiscent of the grrrl- and queer-friendly music that K Records and Kill Rock Stars released in their mid-'90s heyday, the content is decidedly less revolutionary party, and more, well, slumber party.
Rather than tackling heavy ideological issues, Monster Pussy puzzles over the whereabouts of an erstwhile bass player ("Four String No Show"), rhapsodizes over a trusty Subaru station wagon ("The boys in Japan knew what they were doing / when they made this car that keeps me cruising") and wonders over a mix-tape exchange that led to a hot make-out session, but, alas, could not guarantee everlasting love.
The best track is "Invite Me!" ("to your all-girl party!"), an earworm in which frontman Mullarkey, done with the "punching and posing" that defines male bonding, receives instruction on how to gain entrée to the world of the ladies.
This record is perfectly nice summer ear candy, but much of Monster Pussy's appeal lies in their exchanges with one another, and with their audience, during live shows.
The last song on the record is called "Monster Pussy's Theme," and it consists of one line: "We're Monster Pussy ... and you're CUTE!" No, Monster Pussy, that would be you guys.
