Early Economic Impact of SB 1070: Tourism Takes $6 Million Hit in First Week

The hotels are feeling the pain of SB 1070 already. From a recent press release:

The Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association has been notified of 19 meetings that have cancelled in Arizona due to SB1070 in the first week since the controversial legislation was signed into law. These groups represent more than 15,000 room nights and have an economic impact of more than $6 million to the state.

While the state also is being impacted by cancellations from leisure visitors, we are unable to quantify and track the impact of these cancellations.

The Arizona Tourism Industry is deeply concerned about the repercussions that will result from the debate around Senate Bill 1070. Arizona tourism is currently in a very fragile state of recovery and the negative perceptions surrounding this legislation are tarnishing Arizona’s image and could easily have a devastating effect on visitation to our state.
