New: Bowz

Bowz opened Oct. 9 at 7332 N. Oracle Road serving organic sushi and traditional Tokyo-style robata grill fare, along with a full bar, wine and sake. Currently, Bowz is open for dinner only, starting at 5 p.m., but in November, it will also be open for lunch and patio dining; 219-6978.

Café 54 at the Gardens

If you can't get downtown for lunch at Café 54, now you can enjoy the creative menu at Tucson Botanical Gardens daily from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., through April 2007. Café 54 trains and employs adults recovering from mental illness by providing on-the-job training for line cooks, pastry chefs, prep cooks, servers and dishwashers.

Closed

I have to wonder why a restaurant stays open for only four or five months. Sabor on Broadway Boulevard had only been open since May 2006. While the food was pretty good and the menu ambitious, I never saw any advertisements. Previous tenants didn't last very long, either. Produce Corral also closed; it was located in a strip mall on Fort Lowell Road next to a revolving door of sushi restaurants. Gusto Ristorante on signage-crowded Oracle Road is gone; its location was behind Putney's. Four-year-old Aladdin has closed, too.

Think Pink

October is breast-cancer awareness month. October is also Philanthropy With Phlavor month at Pastiche Modern Eatery. Designate 5 percent of your bill to be donated to your favorite charity, like the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. At participating Tucson Originals restaurants, Quail Distributing will donate 10 percent of the purchase of rosé wines to the Komen Southern Arizona affiliate. For the first time in Campbell Soup Company history, labels are changing from red and white to pink and white for the entire month of October to raise money for breast-cancer awareness initiatives across the country. Pink and white cans will be offered for Campbell's two top-selling condensed soups: chicken noodle and tomato. The Campbell's gold medallion will be replaced by a pink ribbon.
