I don't know how much of this I buy into, but in any case, the "slow" Tucson summer is unofficially in the past, with the start of school and the University of Arizona. So what if it's still hotter than hell?
Evidence of the return to normalcy can be found in this week's cover story, because it has to do with the distinctly non-summer theme of high-school sports. Tom Danehy looks at the link between rich high schools and winning, and what he finds is conclusive proof that schools in affluent neighborhoods do better on the field/court than not-so-affluent schools--but not always. Check that out on page 23.
Meanwhile, talk in Tucson is turning to fall activities, such as street fairs, University of Arizona football (motto: If all goes well, we just might go 4-7!) and Best of Tucson®, which is just a little more than a month away. (This is why I won't have much of a life for the next several weeks. The rest of the year, I have no excuse for not having a life.) I can hardly wait.
Anyway, welcome to the unofficial end of summer. And to those of who are returning to Tucson after a summer away, welcome back.
