Best Place to See Ghosts

Barrio Historico

STAFF PICK: On dark nights, legend has it, the ghosts come out to play on West Simpson. The downtown street winds its way past buildings where strange and unpleasant things have happened through time, and apparitions emerge from time to time to remind residents of their sad fates: here a weeping woman who died at her own hand when jilted by a married lover, there a bear made to dance in a riverside grove and a man murdered by a vengeful neighbor. If you're stouthearted, take a stroll by the supposedly ghost-heavy Carrillo School, just south of the El Minuto Café. And while you're there, stop in at the El Tiradito shrine, which commemorates an adulterer who was hacked to pieces for his troubles. Sweet dreams!
