Re: “Some Charter Schools Pay Students To Enroll, Or Get Their Friends To Enroll

Many programs opt to forego traditional advertising, and instead provide incentives to everyday people who help spread the word about excellent programs.

This marketing strategy is a more efficient way of money use, especially for those on a limited budget -- instead of spending millions on a Superbowl ad -- incentives based advertising reaches the audience that is more likely to use the services.

P.S. Public School Districts use portions of their budget (from state funds) to pay for Individuals who promote their School District -- they are called Media Relations Specialists (or something similar).

Public School Districts also lock themselves into contracts with vendors that result in $5 reams of paper, rather than paying $1 from a non-approved vendor during Back-to-School Sales.

Finally, Public School Districts *do* have the option of expelling students, and choosing who they accept -- for example, students must take admission tests for entering TUSD's University High.

Yes, we should be mindful about losing services for the poorest of the poor due to lack of proper funding; we should also be mindful that we should be reviewing spending practices to assure they the best. We should not be afraid of trying new marketing strategies that benefit stakeholders.

Incentive spending is not the problem. Let us identify the real problem, and find real solutions:

Let us educate our children, and teach them about attitude, creativity, vision, and courage. This will improve young minds.

Re: “Some Charter Schools Pay Students To Enroll, Or Get Their Friends To Enroll

Since Charters don't have the benefit of the monopoly power of tax payer supported public schools, I guess they have to try harder. As any marketer knows, getting trial is not hard, but it doesn't pay out if triers don't become loyalists. So the real question is do they get better grades than they deserve to get them to stay ?

Re: “Film On Poisoned U.S. Soldiers Coming To Loft

I agree with skinnyman. I wish a celebrity would take a knee and bring awareness to the criminal negligence our own Dept of Defense gets away with all the time.

People are more outraged at football players using their right to peacefully protest social injustice that is happening in America. They claim disrespect for veterans which is ridiculous since our veterans have fought for our rights to peacefully protest. These same people enraged about kneeling don't say a word about the blatant DISRESPECT the Dept of Defense and the VA show their soldiers EVERY DAY!!!

Using burn pits and lying about it is criminal. Someone needs to be charged with needlessly killing thousands and thousands of our men and women in uniform. That won't happen though. Too much money going into the pockets of too many of our politicians.

I have a whole lot more faith in Maggie's List endorsements:

Re: “Some Charter Schools Pay Students To Enroll, Or Get Their Friends To Enroll

And then there is this:

"I believe it is an oversight to attack BASIS, where children are not required to pass prerequisite exams to enroll, similar to those found in the Tucson Unified School District.

Having had direct experience working at both Rincon High School and University High School, I prefer that all children be provided with a rigorous curriculum and with the services and supports needed to succeed, rather than substandard and sub-par systems that deny students of what I believe is a free and appropriate education."

Doing what TUSD can't seem to get done.

Re: “Kirkpatrick Wins EMILY's List Nod in Race Against U.S. Rep. McSally

I agree with the posters above. Kirkpatrick did not seem to do a great job of representing the interests of the majority citizens in CD1, the Dine (Navajo/Apache).

Much like Barber's long list of compromising on key social programs like reducing unemployment benefits after the Lehman crash in 2008, or drug testing for welfare recipients. His endorsement almost encourages me to look elsewhere for a candidate!

If CD2 is going to elect a democrat, they are going to have to offer something more than "McSally light" and Clinton-era policy, or democrats won't bother showing up to the polls as usual.

Which is all to say that following the lead of the democratic establishment has been a great recipe for electing republicans this decade. I hope they keep up their 'great' work...

Re: “Lee Lee Oriental Supermarket

I relocated recently to Tucson after living on the West Coast for over 20 years and became spoiled by the availability of good quality fresh seafood. Happily I have found a reliable source of reasonably priced fresh seafood at Lee Lee.They do sell some species which are considered sustainable and so far I have been very satisfied with my purchases.

Re: “Kirkpatrick Wins EMILY's List Nod in Race Against U.S. Rep. McSally

"the D.C. establishment is coming together to back Kirkpatrick" Wonderful. And we all know the backing of establishment Democrats means everything. You can't make this stuff up. It's sad that the Democrats have learned nothing from 2016 or from the preceding eight years when they lost 1,000 seats at all levels of government nationwide. Ann Kirkpatrick's website is a joke - no positions, a short video with a lot of empty platitudes. People are tired of 'lesser of two evils' choices in elections. As I said when she ran against McCain, her role in the insidious Oak Flat land swap disqualified her for me. Unless the Democrats nominate a Progressive - Matiella and Wheeler have both posted some Progressive policy positions on their websites - we are likely to see a second term for McSally.

Re: “Kirkpatrick Wins EMILY's List Nod in Race Against U.S. Rep. McSally

EMILY's list is wrong. Kirkpatrick is not running to represent 'Arizona', she is running to represent CD1 and in that context she is a carpetbagger who moved to Tucson only a few months ago as a stepping stone for her political career. She does not care about Tucson or CD1 in any broad sense beyond what it means for her own political ambitions. If this were only a race between Kirkpatrick and McSally, it would be easy to choose Kirkpatrick but this is a preliminary between Anne and many other Democrats who have roots here, actually live here and care about the community. The other candidates deserve a closer look and should not be written off because of Anne's national political clout and more importantly the PAC money and party money she is getting. She is just another big money candidate trying to carpetbag our CD1 seat for her own ambitions. Sounds a lot like McSally but with a D next to her name....

Both candidates favor a continued high immigration / low wage regime. Not much to choose from here.

Re: “Kirkpatrick Wins EMILY's List Nod in Race Against U.S. Rep. McSally

I was initially planning to back Kirkpatrick as she seemed like the most formidable opponent for McSally, especially given her ability to go toe to toe on fundraising. Listening to her early rhetoric and reflecting on the weak campaign she ran against McCain, my plan now is to listen closely to her four opponents to see if they can serve as starker contrasts and more engaging foes to the incumbent. If we fail to beat McSally in 2018, we may be stuck with her for a while. We have time to choose wisely and avoid a mad rush to the choice others have made, even if that seems like the popular option.
