Re: “The New Teacher Certification Rules: Is Everyone Else Wrong, or Am I?

We will have plenty of Ben Steins teaching the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. Anyone? Anyone? You do realize that Charter and private religious schools, already can hire and many do, uncertified teachers. This means Jay Lawrence can go into a classroom, maybe 7th grade math, that would be a nice challenge.

Re: “Education Budgeting

Are you sorry yet, David Safier, that you decided to "hold your nose" and help Ducey et al. get Prop 123 passed?

Looks a lot like all the sophisticated politicos in your network who like to talk about "wedges" and levers and believe they know how to pull strings behind the scenes, patching together big scary "NEXT STEPS!" coalitions etc., ad nauseam, and trying generally to play hard ball with the big boys have ended up with quite a bit of egg on their faces.

Too bad you joined them and helped them embarrass themselves, or now you would be in a good position to make the point that the right way to build coalitions is basing them on sound principles, not on inadvisable concessions made to bad actors.

Re: “The Skinny

Not one mention of mental health issues in your abysmal journalistic attempt. Maybe you'll get 'em next time, Jim. Oh, and thanks for the embarrassingly pointless polling information.

Re: “Smoke Sessions

You hit the nail on the head. A fun side note:When I was a small child, growing up in the rural south, Jeff Sessions once knocked on our families door and offered to buy all of the bedsheets in the house for double their original cost. I know, weird.

Must have been taught writing by one of those semi-qualified teachers.
Teacher need to know HOW to teach as well as knowing the subject matter.

McSally has an F- on immigration - same grade as Raul Grijalva. She votes for increasing immigration and against enforcing immigration laws at virtually every opportunity.

Re: “A 'Fat Cat Tax'?

As long as it's not to pay for more and more illegal aliens and their children, I'm happy to pay more in taxes for useful things like smart infrastructure, mental health care, and education. Unfortunately that won't be the case.

Re: “The Skinny

The media has fanned the flames of hatred and bears responsibility for pushing people to say and do stupid stuff. Tone it down.

Re: “Education Budgeting

Check a recent article in the newsweekly "Economist" for an unbiased review of vouchers and tax credits used around the world for education. The basic thrust of the article is that vouchers & tax credits do work - where there is strong central control. Netherlands is a case in point - number 7 overall in the world (US is 39th), vouchers are used there in religious and sectarian schools but the central government plays a strong roll in ensuring a quality education.

Re: “A 'Fat Cat Tax'?

Just awesome topic! I also can be helpful here :) I just filled out Tax & Accounting with an online software. It looked much better typed than hand-written. I used originformstudio.com/profit-and-loss-statement and it's very easy to use.

Re: “Media Watch

Also worked with Allen in Las Vegas. I'm pretty sure it was the same company. I was startled when he did reporting when I was working at a station there considering I had worked with him here in Tucson for years.

Re: “A 'Fat Cat Tax'?

Safier, you are so full of sh*t ...

"Tax and spend"?

How about call it what it is: Socialism, take from the people who worked for it and have it and give it to the people who haven't.

But the only problem with Socialism is that sooner or later, "you eventually run out of other people's money" (gee, what an irony..this quote is from Margaret Thatcher who is currently rolling over in her grave with this liberal Labour Party proposal).

I don't join the comments section much, but I gotta say, I rarely get so many people saying I got it right. I know people will be all over me in the next post no matter what it is, but I'm going to enjoy this brief moment of positive vibes while it's here.

Re: “If You Think the TUSD Board Election Was a Knock-down, Drag-out Fight, Take a Look at L.A.

It's unclear whether Safier is trying to imply that the struggles over the TUSD Board were cast in the same mold ("privatization," or public district / union vs. charter) in which he says the L.A. struggles are cast. If he is implying that, he is wrong. Neither "faction" / coalition in the TUSD Board battles was pro-Charter, pro-privatization.

There are in fact many different kinds of "education wars" going on both locally and nationally. When it comes to figuring out what's going on or how to vote at the local level, it comes down to understanding the details of the business -- and the conditions in the schools -- in the districts in question. Some public districts are well managed. Others are not. This whole "privatization" narrative has the effect in some cases of throwing a cloak over instances of mismanagement by lumping all public districts in with the "good guys" in their fight against the "villainous privatizers." That's a unique form of B.S. that has developed in our contemporary education media scene that voters would be well advised to develop a way of detecting. If they don't, they may in many cases waste their votes on poor "leaders" who will, in office, do more to undermine the cause of public education than to support it, in spite of what they say during their campaigns.

Not in my front yard! That's the Tucson we have been forced to know and love. I am introducing Doggie Diapers next month that I want the City to purchase with their sales tax increase. What a load.
