Re: “Betsy DeVos Exercises Her Freedom of $peech

Again, thank you to a kind and generous family.
When our inner city, mainly minority students can barely read or even write. And end up in gangs and kill or shoot each other up. Choice is one idea, that gives parents a choice about there children's education. Let's face the truth, it's about the teachers union, and the all mighty dollar, they say it for the children, but let's be honest. It's about the benefits (Cadallic plans) and pay.
A majority of the population works 12 months, again it all comes down to money. There are a lot of people struggling to get a good education from there public schools, and having a choice gives them a oppertunity, to give there children a good chance to make it.
Another witch hunt, just because you don't agree with someone else's point of view. And all you do is talk about someones donations and money. And I bet the author has a friend or close family member whom is a school teacher, dollars to donuts, I bet.

Re: “Student Housing Shakedown

If you wish to understand more about this topic, including the Honors College development, please refer to Steve Kozachik's Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 newsletters. He's written very thoroughly about the issue and challenges.

Re: “Betsy DeVos Exercises Her Freedom of $peech

I'm at a loss to understand the intent of this article. A recitation of donations from the DeVos Foundation without any commentary or in-depth analysis of the group's motivations is nothing more than a dog whistle to those who equate DeVos to an enemy of public education.

I strolled over to 74 Media's site and was surprised to see a fairly typical series of posts and articles on a wide range of topics including an interesting, non-partisan piece on the Chan Zuckerberg initiatives. Also would note the large donations made to Princeton, University of Maryland, Michigan State and Ferris State hardly seem controversial.

Betsy DeVos is no champion of mine and her positions as Secretary of Education largely disgust me. But this writing, lazy and incomplete, almost makes me sympathetic to the charitable work of her family's foundation.

Re: “The New, New Jim Crow

The backlash against Obama had nothing to do with his race, it was completely about his policies:

13% growth as compared to Reagan at 32%

Combined math and reading scores down for the first time in history after "Race to the Top".

Spending another trillion on health care and death rates up.

No one's putting a gun to your head to watch it with Rifftrax. Don't put them down just because you're a hack writing another article about how "so bad it's good" The Room is. It's been out for 14 years.

Rather than tell us how great conservatives and libertarians are, why not tell us how much progressive liberals have given?

Re: “Tucson Salvage

What a delightful well written article. Too many things a person finds on the web are inarticulate or raging against something. This sounds like a place and person I would like to visit and spend some time learning.
Thank you.

Re: “Police Dispatch

The subtext "Maybe He Was Flirting", makes light of a repugnant experience, and shows no respect for the victim. Assault is never a joke.

Re: “Student Housing Shakedown

You make a great case about Steve K and the conflicts of interest that he has sponsored and voted on. Would we allow a Walmart employee to make rezoning decisions for big box stores?

He is right where the UA needs him to be. But how does that help average Tucsonans? Isn't it odd that ever since government was formed ...that they try to help citizens but it never seems to help. In many cases it actually gets worse.

Then we demand MORE government? What is wrong with us?

Re: “High Reward

This will be interesting how the prop 65 in CA works out to see if this is good for the country.
Nevada, Colorado, Washington all incorporated the Marijuana legalization into the existing state liquor division/bureau.

This was not good for Arizona, nay nay! Arizona already had this idea to be a separate governing agency. With it's own banking courts police and revenue collection, which included price controls take away all aspects of community but for revenue collection.

There is about 30 million sitting in the marijuana coffers. Just waiting for the next LaWall or Nanos travel entertainment slush fund type of community support effort.

One of the biggest is the implementation of prop 65 which closely resembled structure of the failed prop 205. Which is the "BUREAU" (we that beast roll out Jan 1st) Agriculture, Education.

I do understand Agriculture, but education? is giving education a taxing authority like giving the church the right to tax? Really is it still education or something else.

Re: “Student Housing Shakedown

Is the Honors College Dorm going to pay property taxes?
Is the City going to sue them to pay property taxes?
Does Kozachik have a conflict of interest regarding the Honors Collage Dorm?

Did the lawsuit against the mini dorms address the issue of unrelated people living in the 8-bedroom residential houses?

Re: “A ‘Dreadful’ Tax Plan

That isnt evidence that it caused the state's deficit. The deficit started before 2015 and ballotpedia also says:

"Governor Brownback signed the fiscal year 2016 budget into law on June 16, 2015. The governor made a few line-item vetoes and noted that he will continue to find ways to limit the size and spending habits of the state government while protecting the state's core services. Total spending under this budget equaled about $15.33 billion, a decrease of about 0.7 percent from fiscal year 2015"

Re: “A ‘Dreadful’ Tax Plan

Thank you Mr Chong(?) very interesting.

Google is your friend Palisades-
"Between fiscal years 2015 and 2016, total government spending in Kansas increased by approximately $439.0 million"-Ballotpedia

In 2015-2016 Education was over 50% of the state budget. In that same year AZ outspent 23 states on Education. I don't believe we have ever been exposed to that fact.
