Re: “Laughing Stock: Mirth for Mom

I love MMC but with all due respect, Nicolette has PERFORMED in the Tucson Fringe Festival's Beer With The Bard. Beer With The Bard is produced and run by Fringe Exec Director, Maryann Green.

Re: “Danehy

Yes, because consensual sex between adults with a large age gap and with one member possibly taking advantage of an infatuation is EXACTLY LIKE asserting one's ability as a "star" to grab and molest women against their will...EXACTLY.

That is the problem with you so-called conservatives. You try to rationalize the execrable behavior of your representatives by equating those behaviors to actions committed by non-conservatives, when said behavior is almost always orders of magnitude worse than anything done by non-conservatives...especially regarding the asshole a minority of US citizens placed in the office of the POTUS. There is nothing you can fling in terms of feigned outrage regarding a non-conservative action that isn't eclipsed by what's going on currently in the WH and Congress.

The hypocrisy, it stinks.

" the Pima County Green Party, the Tucson Bus Riders Union, LUPE Tucson, Tucson SURJ, Black Lives Matter Tucson, Jewish Voice for Peace, and the Arizona Palestine Solidarity Alliance."

And yet all the headline says is Pima County Republicans? Your own article belies your headline.

Re: “The Skinny

I don't live in the city so I don't have direct skin in the game, but I do remember the last time we went through this and I had a daughter working as a police services dispatcher. It's a hard job with low pay and lousy benefits, a stepchild of TPD. She was in year three without a raise after her probation was completed.
They were working 10 to 12 hour shifts and still, I believe, work those shifts, always shorthanded, without a lunch hour and just several 15 minute breaks thrown in to keep them from fainting from hunger (exaggeration but it's bad and the lunch hour is true). The attrition rate is high, the knowledge they have to acquire is extensive and grueling. When the layoffs came, they upped the game. The dispatchers had to take mandatory unpaid leave when they were already shorthanded as always, they lost pay and the people giving up their time off to step in to work for them had to be paid time and a half, showing up still exhausted, if you can make sense either of those facts. Dispatchers ready to come on line after a long hiring and training process were immediately let go, exacerbating the problem. They are the most underpaid, underappreciated part of the TPD and nothing has changed. If the police need more money, perhaps everyone, city and county, should be asked to pitch in five dollars to create a fund to meet their needs and stop the "chasing the bonds" crises. I can assure you that firing new officers, new police dispatchers or exhausting the ones remaining with overwork is a dangerous and stupid process and the only people who benefit from that are the other police agencies who pick up Tucson's trained personnel ready to go to work based on the dollars we spent training them, while we stumble along with their loss.

Re: “The Skinny

TPD has had some controversies in the past few months, but has lately been trying to work WITH activist groups to uphold the law and also make a space for people to practice their rights (which is also upholding the law). Regardless of the unfortunate actions (ok, let's call a spade a spade and say pretty damn awful) officers with TPD employed against LUPE and other groups, officers really ought to have good safety gear. Yeah, and roads are good. Firefighters with decent equipment is also, like, a good thing in a functional society.

I think the think that bothers me the most is that the Fed and the State are passing down fewer dollars to local governments, forcing cities and towns to either A) Do without or B) Raise funds elsewhere.

If you're pissed off at someone, be pissed off at Gov. Doug Ducey for cutting funding for services we ALL need while cutting taxes on those who DON'T need it.

Re: “Editor's Note

Jim,
I really enjoyed the Lake Powell article, and as a water scientist it makes me really happy to see that this is still "in the news," as drought is sort of a "slow disaster." Although it is slow, it is the killer of many a culture. Technology allows us to extend that slow death and even mitigate some of the disaster, but there will always be consequences to this.

It's not that I don't respect the "art" main stories the Weekly has been publishing of late, but I am happy to see something a little "harder" this month.

You'll do a great job as interim editor!

Clinton was the President and old enough to be Monica's father. Maybe he took advantage of the fact that she was just a teensy bit infatuated with him. Just asking.

Re: “The Skinny

I strongly believe the city has been spending road funds appropriately, that they've done what they said, and I support them. This has been a good team...

I also strongly believe more sales tax isn't the answer. It's time our public servants started acting like citizens - my truck is 30 years old. I'm about to put it's 3rd new engine in it. When you're strapped for cash, you FIX things instead of acting like a $300k fire truck is as disposable as a dixie cup. Worried about reliability? Replace the whole engine next time instead of whatever breaks. I'm willing to bet a brand-new diesel engine is less than $20k. That's a factor of 10, and you essentially have a new truck...

Re: “Got a Bachelor's Degree? There May Be a Public School Teaching Job Waiting For You.

Arizona Going to Hell in a Handbasket

You say that we can see from direct experience that Arizona is going to hell in a handbasket. Yet, we have school district that have rigorous systems for measuring parent's direct experience.

Those parents don't agree with you. It is quite likely that our ratings of school quality by parents are the highest in the nation. We have school districts triple the national average.

You say that Pima County MVD is not doing well. What, specifically was your experience there? How long did you wait? Were you able to complete your transaction in one visit? If not, did you get the info you needed to complete your transaction?

What we have is a lamentation orchestra. Instead of focusing on the true mission, developing the next generation, we have many people who work to create a culture of lamentation built around a false mission of maximizing pensions.

What is our mission? To develop our children or to maximize the pensions of exiting adults? All the commentary on this blog suggests that the true mission of the district system is to maximize pensions.

Re: “Editor's Note

It simply follows the rule of college journalism. They promote government expansion at any cost and don't do for yourself, wait until somebody does it for you. Add to that the global warming fraud still being run by old democrats, and you have a liberal wackadoo world.

Challenge your professors for evidence.

Jim,
Your newspaper is dying because you are not interested in any opinion counter to Liberal, Left Wing.
Evidence? Recently you refused to print a carefully researched argument against Planned Parenthood.
We have known each other for decades and I wish you well, but you have created an intellectual desert that will not sustain itself. Pleasing the Left should not be your mission, but seems to be.

The Tucson Weekly could save the peanut gallery a lot of time and publish an automatic "I-love-______, -but-I-don't-want-to-pay-for-it-so-let-someone-fundraise-for-the-____________service-that-I-don't-realize-actually-impacts-my-individual-earnings-and-quality-of-life" comment at the end of every article that mentions taxes.

Also, thought I'd add the link to the City of Tucson Adopted Budget for 2017.
Police, fire....it's all there: https://www.tucsonweekly.com/tucson/the-sk…

Re: “The Skinny

Amazing that the Democrats under President Obama tried to do something NOBLE and GOOD for the American people since we are the only western nation that doesn't offer Universal Health Care to ALL of it's citizens but because President Obama is BLACK the Republicans refused to allow him to do anything noteworthy while in office they denigrated the program as though Obama had thrown poison in the well water. Just as Social Security has issues that can be solved the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT had issues that could be solved but the Republicans, like Egyptians in ancient times want to erase any evidence that Barack Obama ever existed and anything that he signed into law that they can get rid of will be gotten rid of. My quandary is that when 65 MILLION people are receiving Social Security and 24 MILLION or more were covered under the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT why those people would ever allow a Republican to get elected much less have an opportunity to eliminate the programs that insure their ability to continue to live?

Re: “Editor's Note

Um..."the disturbing changes that have come as the water level in Lake Powell has dropped during our most recent drought." ???

FLASH! There wasn't a Lake Powell until the construction of the dam. Dropping lake levels are more like Mother Nature trying to restore that part of northern AZ and southern UT to what had been there up until 50 or so years ago.

This sounds more like a "win" for the region, rather than a disaster.

Re: “Danehy

Trump is definitely a sex offender. Even Bill Clinton has nothing on the Arrogant Orange Offender when it comes to this category. Read something besides your usual fake news and alternative facts and you may just learn something. Or, as usual, you will not learn a goddamned thing. Please try though.
