Re: “Soundbites

Went to see Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers Saturday night and wanted to report (Rythm & Roots Series at Plaza Palomino). I have one word to describe the concert...F_ _KING AWESOME! (OK, 2 words!) That might've been the best blues concert I've ever been to, (and I'm a long time blues fan). Rod was amazing on harp/ vocals and the other three members of the band were all exceptional and tight- it was obvious they have played together for a long time. It was so high energy. I was struck by how varied their music selection was (and sounded) as a band's play list can sometimes sound repetitious, especially with only 4 people on stage, (Henry Carvajal lead guitar & vocals, Honey Piazza keyboards & Dave Kida percussion).

There was everything from boogie-woogie to do-wop to straight up blues. There was one song where the other band members left the stage one-at-a-time until it was just Rod. He had a radio mic and wound his way through the audience just jammin' & improvising. After about 5 minutes the other band members returned to the stage & joined back in for a rollicking finale. Too much! The setting was great, and the weather was perfect. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend you go see them! (Thanks to Marty Kool- KXCI for turning me on to him during The Blues Review).

re: P.O.S.: how sad that "rap-rock" should now evoke "negative connotations" -- when so much of what it started out as was so encouraging. the first record by Rage Against The Machine was amazing, and they only got better. too bad the sub-genre devolved as it did.

Re: “Soundbites

You gave very short shrift to the appearance of Ordo Sakhna at the Solar Culture Gallery next Thursday, Feb. 11. This is an extremely rare opportunity to see a musical group that has resurected the lost cultural music and dance of the small Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan. It is very ancient and compelling music that you likely won't be able to hear performed live again anytime soon. You can listen to the music here:

Re: “Soundbites

I have listened to independent music for ten years. I have to admit, Race You There definitely has a unique style of diversity and promise that some bands lack in the industry with extreme highs and lows in their thoughtful music. As for Gila Bend, Loren Dircks covers equally diverse styles that really stretch his talents. I like both of these groups, and can't wait for more music from both.

Re: “Soundbites

Am I just missing the mention of the Cowboy Mouth concert tonight at the Rialto? These guys are one of the best live bands you will ever see. It's only the second time they have been here, so if you haven't heard of them before, GO TO IT! I expect to see a review next week!

Re: “Soundbites

Stephen Siegel on GWAR: "Really intentionally goofy—but fun—metal, to be precise, with titles like "Baby Raper," "Slaughterama" and "Fishfuck."

Stephen Siegel on ICP: "Bearing in mind that ICP's lyrics are often gruesomely violent—one song is called, simply, "I Stab People"—that message, in a nutshell, was to follow God if you want to get to heaven. Huh?" on Stephen Siegel: Huh?

Re: “Soundbites

although my new record is a bit subdued, don't be fooled: mark matos & os beaches is a rollicking, noisy, psych-gospel, electric kool-aid kind of live experience. come out and see us at congress or red room. find what you've been been missing. the water in san francisco has eating my atom brain. stephen siegal: if you don not show up i am going to send DMT laced lazer beams out of my eyes, through the radio waves, and pierce your pituatory gland (or however you spell that). ALSO: GOLDEN BOOTS are playing with us at congress!! that's important. Be there or hear about it later.

Re: “Soundbites

Not over budget Steven the construction budget WAS met, it just cost extra to redesign it in order to make a better bridge with more pedestrian crossings. but who cares about better if it is supposed to last for at least the next 100 year or so, right?

I have to say my Grandfather is the best. And thru out all the year I've known my Grandfather,I guess all my life. Re: “Soundbites

Ok that Harlem picture is pretty inexcusable. Why do white kids still think its cute to dress up like what ever they imagine to be "Indians"?
Its like they are spoiled brats who don't understand that its disrespectful to degrade, over-generalize and treat other cultures as if they were toys.

So no matter how great their music may be, I will never hear it. And if I see them on the street, I'll call them on their casual hipster racism. UGH!!
