John Cusack gets to go all crazy in this latest film based on the writings of Stephen King. Cusack plays a grieving father and author who, after the death of his daughter, focuses his attentions on debunking supposed haunted hotels. Upon hearing about an especially creepy place in New York City, he demands the keys to an “evil” room, much to the chagrin of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson). Things start going bad the moment he checks in. Let’s just say Jack Nicholson had it so much easier in that other King hotel horror story. Cusack does a fine job of freaking out, and Jackson makes for a good angry hotel manager. The film isn’t so much scary as unnerving, but it does have its share of decent jolts. It also uses the music of The Carpenters in the creepiest of ways.
