13 Going on 30

Jennifer Garner is downright luminescent in her first leading-lady role as a 13-year-old in a 30-year-old body. At her 13th birthday party, Jenna Rink wishes she was 30, and wakes up in a ritzy Manhattan apartment with a naked hockey player in hot pursuit. In order to keep paying the rent, she reports to her adult job as a magazine editor, where she takes the trade by storm with all of her high school yearbook editing tactics. Sure, the film is dumber than a brain-damaged ferret, but Garner’s sparkle in the role keeps things afloat. Helping matters is indie fave Mark Ruffalo as Matty, Jenna’s childhood friend and grown up world guide. Their relationship is irresistibly cute, and Ruffalo brings some nice credibility to the mix. It’s not going to set the world on fire with its high- octane intellectual prowess, but it’s definitely good enough for a Saturday night.
