Tucson is the home to one of the most prolific cartoonists in the industry. It won’t be until Max Cannon is worm chow when we truly appreciate the genius that is Red Meat. Thankfully, the man with a van is celebrating his birthday today.
Max has been graciously giving us a weekly comic strip for the last 25 years. Since it’s almost impossible to give him a gift that will measure up to the pain and joy he has given us, all he will get from the Weekly offices is this blog post. I don’t know if Max knows this or not, but he was one of the reasons why I picked up this paper. Honestly, I don’t know if I would be here if it weren’t for him.
It’s an honor to call him a friend and colleague.
Happy Birthday, Max.

The thing I love best about Red Meat is that my favorite strips are very rarely the favorites of people I know. Red Meat has something for everyone!
Happy B-day, Max!
I fully appreciated Max’s genius the second I read the first Red Meat strip I’d ever read and made the immediate decision to publish RED MEAT in the Tucson Weekly—the first alt-weekly in the world to publish the esteemed comic strip. So, yeah, Max is a fucking genius. Always has been.
Happy birthday, mad genius, and I hope your van down by the river was a-rockin’.
Happy birthday, Max! Don’t let Milkman Dan make your cake! 🙂
Happy Birthday Max! I worked the front office in the mid90s when Doug still owned it.
You would flirt w/me on the phone and said my voice was sexy! You always made my day.
You’re a twisted man and I love you for it…Mmmaugh!!! <3
