We’ve got this coming through here thanks to our friends over at the Phoenix New Times: Apparently, if you admit to having voted for Barack Obama, your money isn’t welcome in Pinetop’s Southwest Shooting Authority gun shop.

From Ammoland, where owner Cope Reynolds posted his announcement:

The sign in question.
  • Facebook
  • The sign in question.

We will try to demonstrate once again that the bottom line for our business is principle, not money.

Yes, it has been damaging at times but our values are intact.

Effective immediately, if you voted for Obama, your money is no good here. You have proven beyond a doubt that you are not responsible enough to own a firearm. We have just put a sign up on the front door to save you the trouble of walking all the way in here….

As Reynolds admitted to the New Times, this is just a political statement, and a hell of an eye-catching stunt. But let’s be honest: As someone who is considered responsible enough to legally carry a concealed firearm*, being considered too irresponsible to buy one for voting for someone of a different political party is asinine.

*Yes, I know, EVERYONE is legally permitted to carry a concealed firearm in this state. That’s the joke. It’s not funny when you make me explain it.

  1. And this extremist thinks Republicans are safe with guns. I think not. Gee, now the NRA will miss out on some donations they get.

  2. I’m an Arizona resident, a gun owner, and I voted for President Obama because the thought of putting an unprincipled corporate raider in charge of this country made my stomach turn.
Some of the right wing rhetoric I’ve overheard in gunshops over the last few years would not have sounded out of place in Nazi Germany. It does make me want to say to these neo-cons, “I own a firearm to protect myself from idiots like you.”

  3. Peace, if the shop owner had any sense it would be anyone stupid enough to vote in any election is not welcome. voting means to make a vow, which is a solemn promise, a promise upon your very soul.
Suffrage being the granted ‘right’ to vote to be bound by the dictates of the one with the cumulative justification, the vote of the body, of a majority of votes forming the authority of the representative of the suffrage, the suffragium, meaning ‘vote commanded’ who can then vote within an assembly of the corporations policy makers, voted representatives, on behalf of the universal suffrage. The purpose of the vote is to allow passive consent, known as sufferance, of the corporations imposed policy, sufferance means, to endure misery, hardship and pain.

  4. The idiotic paranoia, stoked by the National Rifle Association, that President Obama is going to take away or even restrict guns is unfounded. During the President’s first term, he signed a bill that allows carrying handguns in National Parks. What restriction on guns has the President signed? What restriction has he proposed?

Before the 2008 election there was a poorly reasoned NRA flap, saying that if Obama would be elected every single bullet would have a tracking device implanted, so law enforcement could identify who owned ammunition. Where is President’s Obama’s proposal to tag every piece of ammunition?

I resigned my 50+ year long (on and off) NRA membership earlier this year, when the NRA opposed a proposal by the Bureau of Land Management to close the Ironwood National Monument, located west of Tucson, to recreational shooting. Shooters were (are?) regularly mowing down giant saguaro cacti in that Monument. The NRA’s position should have been to post a handsome reward for the arrest and conviction of those shooters, to provide seed money for construction of a new shooting range and to support closure of this ecologically sensitive area. This NRA position, along with having far right ogres like Sean Hannity, Oliver North, Sarah Palin, Glen Beck and Ted Nugent as featured speakers at their conventions convinced me that belonging to the NRA was no longer palatable for me.

This gun shop’s insulting position about the re-election of President Obama is part of the whole paranoid gun lobby crap. Makes me happy I am no longer an NRA member.

  5. He has a right to voice his view on those who voted for Obama. I can’t say I disagree with him. I am still amazed that anyone with any knowledge about Benghazi, Fast and Furious, amnesty to millions here illegally, would even think of voting for a man like Obama who ran one of the most distasteful campaigns in history.

  6. Honey, it’s all just good old fashion racism. We have a 1/2 black man in the white house and some ‘good ole boys’ are just plain mad. Grow up gentlemen, look around. We almost all of us are of mixed heritage, if not mixed ethnic groups. I am Scotch, Irish, English and Dutch…and if I had African, Native, Chinese, or Japanese American in my blood, I would still be me. It’s all driven by fear and the need to blame someone else for our problems.

  7. Guessing maybe he’d rather sell a weapon to some wingnut who wants to secede, or is a skinhead, or a racist, or someone like Loughner….makes me wonder about these people..

  8. I would consider anyone who voted for obumer incompetent. I wouldn’t even hire them either they can go get their obummer phone.

  9. I would love to go shopping at this business and pick out several thousand dollars worth of items to buy. When it is time to pay for the said purchase and I’m told the cost, I would make a comment about how well I’m doing financially lately “Thanks to President Obama and his policies that have helped my business thrive. It’s a good thing I voted for him because it’s really paying off for both of us!”

Let’s see how quickly Mr. Reynolds forgets about the sign at that point. If he doesn’t then he is a true man of his word, but a STUPID true man of his word nonetheless. If he does accept the patronage I would put my wallet back in my pocket and say “You got punked, bitch” or “April fools” or something of that nature then call him a hypocrite redneck on my way out the door.

  10. It’s a hoot to watch defective human creatures like this gun-store owner cower from their paranoid fantasies filled with black helicopters from the UN, “Lib-Ruls” and a 1/2 black man sending his storm troopers to take their precious (worthless) guns away from them…

You can almost smell the fear from these rabbits…

And they create in their own tiny minds their own punishment…

  11. Recovery Coach. When are you morons going to figure out it has nothing to do with race. Alot of black folks have plenty bad to say about Bush. Does that make them racist? No.
You need to recover from what ever happen to your head when you fell on it.
