Congressman Raul Grijalva told his House colleagues today he won’t be attending Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration:

Thank you Mr. Chairman. I rise today to tell my constituents that I will not be attending the inauguration of Donald Trump as our next president. My absence is not motivated by disrespect for the office, or motivated by disrespect for the government that we have in this great democracy. But as an individual act – yes, of defiance – at the disrespect shown to millions and millions of Americans by this incoming administration, and by the actions we are taking here in this Congress.

The majority of voters rejected Trump. They deserve respect. The 20 million plus Americans threatened by the repeal of the Affordable Care Act without a replacement deserve respect. The millions who did not vote because they blame both parties deserve respect.

I will be at home in Arizona, meeting with seniors, the immigrant community, folks that care about the environment and climate change, healthcare providers. [I will be] marching in Tucson with folks who will demand respect. I will be talking about the need to defend and protect the future for all Americans. Rather than participate in the inauguration, I will be participating in my district and reaffirming, and renewing, this democracy, and the people that are part of it.

  1. A Phony uses a phony excuse to disrespect the new President. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Raul is a jerk. A grade-A, can’t be topped jerk.

  2. Oh my gosh. Donald will be heartbroken if this racist gaspacho is a no show. If he could drop the hatred long enough to listen to them he would have heard the ACA is not being repealed without a replacement coming on board.

Try giving some respect. You might get some.

You and Sen McCain could get together to plot against our citizens.

  3. Of course he won’t. He hates America. He’s so crushed he won’t have any power to actively destroy it anymore.

And his ‘constituents’ in Mexico should welcome him back to his home country.

  4. Oh no. Tell me it’s not true. Raul the fool won’t be there. They better keep all guns and sharp objects away from Trump. What does this self-important putz think Trump is going to do, beg him? What a brass pair.

  5. It is no surprise that Trumpites would talk smack about Grijalva and add enough comments for us all to recognize that they are racist bigots. We know their roots and we know what to expect. OK we all get it.

What I think is being lost on many in Tucson is the amount of disgust that Grijalva has accumulated within the Mexican voting community. I live, work and socialize mostly on the beautiful west and southwest side of Tucson. For about a year and a half I have repeatedly heard criticism about Grijalva. Here is a short list:
    The lack of responsiveness from his office. It is extremely slow or non-existent;
    Raul Grijalvas continuous display of drunkenness in public. He falls all over himself; stammers and basically embarrasses himself;
    His constant interference into Tucson Unified School District politics based on his daughters lack of skill and ability to do the job on her own. She would be a big zero without his political support;
His exploitation of progressive issues. He knows that those of us who are progressives cannot much argue with his voting record. However, for him this is a no brainer. He supports every progressive issue and knows that it is going to go down in flames in the current Congress. He hardly has to work but he still accrues points; and
His is so-called machine, which may be losing some its steam. (Many of Rauls candidates lost on November 8th, including one who he practically raised: Cam Juarez
It is time to oust Raul and replace him with someone outside of his incestuous camp. The Grijalva machine is not serving the community, inclusive of the Mexican community. He has not delivered much of anything to improve Tucson or to positively impact the working class of Tucson.
Raul has become the worst of politicians. His alcoholism impedes him both physically and mentally and he relies on all of his enablers to help him get by. Getting by just is not good enough.
(A short list of his enablers: Mona Grijalva, Adelita Grijalva, Glenn Miller, Regina Romero and Mr. Regina Romero, Richard Elias, Ramon Valodez, Dan Eckstrom, Jonathon Rothschild, all Tucson Weekly writers, the Pima County Democratic Party, HT Sanchez, Kristel Foster, Cam Juarez, Isabel Garcia, etc.)

  6. So basically all the posters are correct? This is not about racism except by him and his progressive racist roots.

Apparently we don’t “all get it.” Progressives will allow anybody to advance their cause as long as theirs is also hidden in their amongst it.

Do you know if he is driving drunk?

  7. ” The millions who did not vote because they blame both parties deserve respect.”-huh? You were elected by voters to represent the non voters and get them some respect? Respect is way over rated when it is doled out like accepting full responsibility for something. As in Janet Reno and the Branch Davidian deaths. It meant nothing.

Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that when the ACA is repealed that those poor people would no longer be productive members of society, because they lost their preventative care.

Nancy, they have a $10,000 deductible! That prevents them from going to the doctor. And the skyrocketing rates are keeping the REAL rate payers from eating.

Take you socialist progressive ideas back to the country where you saw them working successfully and join them.

    The voters have spoken.

  8. No, YOU do not get it.

The comments made earlier do have racial bias interjected into them. Just because there is one drunken, rotten apple among the elected progressives does not negate the value of the issues which we support. We, unlike most right (gotta be right all the time) wingers is that we can fess up and say that someone who is allegedly progressive is not serving the community. It will be sometime before most of the die in the wool “Trumpies” abandon him for being inept. He will do nothing for the lower and middle class of this nation. He will make it easier for the rich to get richer on the backs of the working class.

Raul always has a driver. One of his enablers.

  9. Wrong, Again…as usual.

Raul Grijalva was born in the USA.

Your racism blinds you from facts.

Dying slowly…although the pace is increasing with each nasty, racist and ill informed post.

  10. No, YOU do not get it.

FU for calling people racist bigots.

‘Progressives’ offer no value. Their entire agenda is to undermine and not respect the Constitution of the United States of America. You’re communists and won’t even admit it. And now you have been totally repudiated at both the state and federal level.

  11. But Wrong, Again…No- YOU do NOT get it! was calling you a racist bigot.

That is the truth which is common knowledge for those who actually have common sense.

I understand that you don’t understand this because common sense is the lost ark as far as you’re concerned.

  12. It is amazing how many things are mistakenly labeled as racist, and then how racism is actually missed by those same people.

Inept? How many abandoned Obama because he was inept?

Does it set you off when somebody imitates Ricky Ricardo?

  13. Here is the thing, “the Russians” and Dan H.- “Gazpacho” does have racial overtones. Criticize the policies if you like, with facts and not racist overtones. I mean facts; not opinions. And- FYI Ricky Ricardo should have no mention in any civil debate here. I am a progressive and have always stood strongly against communism. Currently, the Neo-Nazi movement has many, like Duke (a Trump lover) who are straight out of the R party. Hundreds of Neo-Nazis campaigned for Trump. This are facts. But, let’s please stop this. My post, as a progressive, was about my fact-based reasons for not supporting Raul Grijalva. Even though we may not agree on why he should be ousted, why don’t we for one split second celebrate the fact that we agree.

  14. Slave Master wannabe AC/DC – I never said Raul the Pig was not born in the US. But his allegiance is 100% to Mexico where his family came from.

  15. Hey Dumb Ass:

When your comment reads EXACTLY like this:

“And his ‘constituents’ in Mexico should welcome him back to his home country.”

That means you believe he was born in Mexico.

Slave Master wannabe? Seriously? You are such a unintelligent jerk. Please, burn out already. I can’t think of anything more useless than you. You sad pathetic snowflake, cupcake, pancake.

  16. Thanks for the notice. I got gazpacho from the Mexican blog on this publication. he throws it around all the time. I thought it was a tomato based soup, kind of like salsa.

    But let’s clarify your comment:

It is time to oust Raul and replace him with someone outside of his incestuous camp. The Grijalva machine is not serving the community, inclusive of the Mexican community. He has not delivered much of anything to improve Tucson or to positively impact the working class of Tucson.

Doesn’t that read like racism to you? It is hard to back away once name calling starts, but you were quicker to call names of those that oppose his politics, than you were of him, even after identifying him as having a racist agenda.

By the way, support in comment by David Duke does not change who you are. I am guessing he at least voted. As opposed to the non voters that Grijalva is trying to get some respect for.

Here are some quotes from Malcolm X after his epiphany of race in Mecca*.

I realized racism isnt just a black and white problem. Its brought bloodbaths to about every nation on earth at one time or another.

In many parts of the African continent I saw white students helping black people. Something like this kills a lot of argument. I did many things as a [Black] Muslim that Im sorry for now. I was a zombie then like all [Black] Muslims I was hypnotized, pointed in a certain direction and told to march.

I am not a racist. In the past I permitted myself to be usedto make sweeping indictments of all white people, the entire white race and these generalizations have caused injuries to some whites who perhaps did not deserve to be hurt. Because of the spiritual enlightenment which I was blessed to receive as a result of my recent pilgrimage to the Holy city of Mecca, I no longer subscribe to sweeping indictments of any one race. I am now striving to live the life of a trueMuslim. I must repeat that I am not a racist nor do I subscribe to the tenants of racism. I can state in all sincerity that I wish nothing but freedom, justice and equality, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all people.

*Mecca, in a desert valley in western Saudi Arabia, is Islams holiest city, as its the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and the faith itself. Only Muslims are allowed in the city.

Al Sharpton emulates Malcolm X. Al Sharpton supported Obama.

    See how that works?

  17. Hey slavemaster wannabe ac/dc – you, Raul the Pig and John McCain are the ones that said we have to have the Mexican people to perform the low wage jobs, your own personal slaves.

  18. U.S. Rep. Grijalva should be commended for his courage in denouncing Donald Trump who is Mentally Unstable, and Crook, and Unfit to Service as the President of the United States. More Democrates, as well as Republicans, should follow the example of Congressman Grijalva!! Hats off to the Congressman!!!!

Trump is complicit in the espionage carried out by the Russians, may even have collaborated with them, and, in the least should be charged with espionage!!!

  19. I am praying with a new supreme court appointment and the redistricting issue still resolved. The way is was left and the issue of how congressional boundaries were set up.

The redistricting committee asked the Justice Dept at that time what the parameters were on redistricting guidelines. As told the only consideration was minority representation. So what essentially the redistricting committee drew up lines by area square mile rather than population. Essentially the idea of one man one vote GONE!! but one area gets to control one area regardless of the economic and intrastate commerce. So the redistricting committee made sure that commerce and industry of all sorts now goes through the port in San Luis. And Yea Raul Family that still lives in Mexico has profited greatly from the shift.

  20. Hey Dumb Ass:

How can I be a “slavemaster wannabe” when I don’t have your precious Orange Emperor’s cash flow? Only guys like that can make your fantasy happen. Make sure to bury your nose and mouth in that orange pit that lies between them orange cheeks.

Also, don’t bother to come up for air, you precious orange shortcake you.

  21. Lets ask with where the celebration is going to be for all of the repeal of antiquities act and us Attorneys. Raul and Hillary and the progressive got Trump elected turned the nation Red.

    SO

    OWN IT IS YOURS
THE CULMINATION OF FEMINISM PROGRESSIVE OVERSIGHT, ERUDITE ARROGANCE

  22. “To understand that decision, Grijalva said, people need to know that loyalty is important to him. It goes back to 1981, long before Glassman and most of Tucson’s current politicos were on the scene, when he was arrested for driving under the influence, while he was still on the school board.

“When I endorsed Glassman, they said I turned my back on the Latinos, but those are choices that are … based on history and loyalty and returning a favor,” he said. “I don’t forget the people who were there for me when no one else was. I don’t forget the people who helped me resurrect my career after my DUI.”

Mari Herreras June 28, 2012 Tucson Weekly

    Thank you Mari.

Thought I would also look at wikipedia.

Ral Grijalva’s father was a migrant worker from Mexico who entered the United States in 1945 through the Bracero Program and labored on southern Arizona ranches.[1] Grijalva was born in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1967. He is a 2004 inductee to the Sunnyside High School Alumni Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Arizona and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. While at the University, he was a member of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztln (MEChA) which, at that time, was a radical group identified with the separatist “Aztln” ideology. Grijalva also served as a leader of the Chicano Liberation Committee and other Chicano groups.
In addition, he was an Arizona leader of the Raza Unida Party. According to the standard history of the party by Dr. Armando Navarro, “Grijalva was so militant that he alienated some members of Tucson’s Mexican-American community. After losing in his first bid for elective office, a 1972 run for a seat on the school board, he began to cultivate a less radical image.

    Militant? Interesting.

  23. Then we should expect to see you out there volunteering at a shelter! Do something for your community you butterball! #allpoliticianssuck

  24. Wow! It is too bad that The Weekly has now attracted these nothing-beyond- high-school-graduate- low-level thinkers. And even if they have PhD.s, they are not thinking beyond their politically repressed high school graduate level. Comments used to be somewhat intellectual in The Weekly. Is this part of the unleashing of the Trump-haters? Must be. I have a very strong feeling that the approximately 150,000 voters from the three states that wound up giving Trump his electoral votes to win are going to very sorry when they see that Trump could care less about the “common” person. You know, most of us! Trump is all about his scheme to become even wealthier. Why else hide his tax returns? His jive about being audited is just more of his bull-Trump. He is nothing but a shifty coward. and his Russian connections. Perhaps before it is all over he will be hung for treason. We can only hope. Just remember that 3,000,000 MORE (yes, MORE) voters voted for Hillary. Like her or not, she got the most votes in the United States of America.

  25. I think Mr. Siatta would break out with some sort of hives no one ever heard of if he was ever faced with facts. I would suggest seeing a mental health specialist. Better yet, how about supporting what you said with one of those elusive facts?

  26. Once again to all the college graduates….there is no prize for the MOST votes. 8th grade Civics taught about the Electoral College, before the progressives destroyed public education.

All those “intellectual comments” did not lower the national debt, create well paying jobs for Americans, or even make my healthcare insurance affordable. Instead we invested in rainbows and unicorns.

Thus the phrase “over educated idiots.”

The Cubs made a lifetime out of being good losers. Add good to your resume.

  27. U still do not get it. The point is that the majority of voters did not want a Billionaire ego-maniac to represent their interests. A fact. Yes, we lost but then so did the entire country. Let’s see what happens within the next 6 months. We will find out soon if the Don compromised himself while in Moscow. My bet is he did which explains why he keeps defending Putin; a barbaric war criminal. Hum! Does it not bother you that Putin supports Trump along with all of the skin heads?

  28. I know it’s asking a lot, but how about giving the guy a chance before you condem him. Believe me, if he drops the ball I’ll be the first one to bitch. If right-wingers treated Obama the way Trump is treated we’d be the worst racists of all time. Skin heads? Another asshole heard from. I love when you fools prove my point for me.

  29. Still do not get it!

Sorry you don’t understand or support the Constitution of the United States but no-one is stopping you to live in New York, California, Massachusetts or a couple other states that supported Crooked Hillary, but the rest of the country says FU!

  30. Well gee…

Considering that weak logic, your dumb ass should move to Maricopa County.

That way you could stain the New Times website, instead of annoying 99.99999% of the people who visit this site. I hope that you have a facebook account, I believe that’s how they do stuff over there. In a way, I do understand that…it keeps out prickhead trolls such as yourself.

  31. If intelligence were U.S. currency, you would be lucky if you actually had a nickel.

The ignorance posted at 10:54 AM validates every comment I have posted regarding the slimy, hideous troll that Infects the TW site known as Wrong, Again. I rest my case.

Thanks for proving my point you poor, pathetic, delicate little snowflake you.

  32. Crusty – just think, in less than a week you’ll be able to wake up and spread a little Trump excrement on your toast every morning – for the next 8 years – and it will be GREAT!

  33. 8 years. Doubt it highly.

But, hey, if that’s what it takes to chip a little bit of the black tar off of your heart then run with it. Anything you can do to keep life in mama’s basement a little more interesting without being a useless troll benefits everyone…including yourself. Keep up the GREAT work cupcake.

  34. I ran for Congress against Grijalva and he had one of his insider’s sue my petition signatures…Pima county Elections stated I was 80 signatures short of getting on the ballot. But what Tucson’s election’s office did not tell all of Tucson District 3 is that they only counted my petition signatures in Pima County only, not Nogales, Ajo, Sells, Maricopa. I found my 80 verified signatures and more, filed in Tucson’s Superior court and asked for clarification and acknowledgment of signatures. I was denied having my name on the Primary list and thereafter the Generals…I signed an affidavit under duress,, harassment, flat tire, my attorney quitting the day before, my numbers mathematician also quit and I was left standing alone with no support. Local News won’t touch me… My name, my congressional run stopped. Let’s se how long my post stays up.

  35. I am glad to see that peoplecare willing to step forward and tell the truth about the Grijalva family. Please let the public know. This man needs to be ousted.

  36. I worked for the County for 14 years. He would take 2 maintenance men in the middle of the day and have them use a county truck to move something for him. I had a good friend who worked in H.R. The things I heard about Raul were sickening. He used the merit system rules like a urinal.

  37. I believe we all learned along growing up. Those that tell what they dont like about someone. how that someone disgust them. Is the salt of hate.

  38. You pinko commie progressive liberals better run and hide because my orange tyrannical stagnant conservative king will stomp on you when he takes over in a few days!! Get ready to go home and not be able to ever come back because of the new orange wall illegals!! I can’t wait to dig the orange marmalade out of those orange cheeks and spread it on my toast every morning!! It gives me a carrot in my pocket just thinking about it!!

  39. Thanks AC/DC – they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Enjoy your excrement toast – each and every morning for the next 8 years!

  40. I’m not sure why I’m thanking a heavy metal music band or why I love excrement toast. One thing I am sure of though, I need psychiatric help.

  41. Of course he’s not attending. Just like a foolish liberal to go cry in the corner when they don’t get their way. The mental disorder named Obama is finally leaving and now the country can start healing. I say it’s a good thing this vociferous opponent is sitting it out. We dont need aNY more negativity moving forward. TRUMP MMXVII.

  42. You guys know i was replying to the earlier comment, not saying that statement as if it were true right?

Can i have my like points i deserve

  43. I love troll-on-troll violence.

I love it when the f*ckwit parade disintegrates into chaos and bizarre psychosexual babble.

I love the infantilization of our political culture (wasn’t there a movie about that?), so vividly displayed here.

I love it when empires rot from within and come crashing down into their own footprints, like a demolished skyscraper that looked like it would stand forever, right up until the moment it became a pile of rubble and dust.

The American people, truly, shall get the government they so richly deserve. And the rest of the world will get f*cked.

  44. There is no escape from truth, it is right behind you, gaining on you, it will be on your left, your right, then in front, you will stumble over it, try to climb over it, crash into it, make you weep or set you free. No lies, rationalizations, justifications, ignorance, stupidity, religious indoctrination or messenger avoidance will protect you. It will give you heaven or the righteous hell you deserve.

  45. I just got back from Florida, where there is now an issue that has been reported in several places. Trump’s behavior has opened the door for people to believe that it is ok to shout down people of color with insults and F-bombs. There is actually a lawsuit there that may set a precedent (or from the new speller-in-chief, a “president”). An American who’s a dark fellow (from India) and also a successful medical doctor is suing a real estate company that sold him an expensive house and did not tell him that the neighbors were nasty, violent racists. They stood on his front lawn, tried to come into his house, shouted, swore, threatened, insulted and terrified his whole family. He may win in court.

  46. I am very disappointed in Mr Grijalva’s decision to avoid the presidential inauguration. It is not an endorsement of the person you are to work with, but rather a celebration of the peaceful transfer of power. His actions show a complete disdain for our form of government. Many try to confuse you with the talk of “democracy,” but we are a Constitutional Republic. There is a difference. Please rethink your boycott Mr Grijalva.
