As reported earlier, Tucson Unified School District was found in violation of A.R.S. §15-112 – a law that’s meant to prevent schools from “promoting resentment towards a particular race among other, overthrowing the United States government, and advocating ethnic solidarity over treatment of people as individuals.”

Outgoing Gov. Jan Brewer signed the law in 2010.

Two years later, TUSD had to shut down its Mexican American Studies program because it was found in violation of such law. The district’s board then issued and approved a new curriculum that included “culturally relevant” classes, such as Mexican American history and culture, for students to take as electives starting this school year – something the state did not oppose.

Last month, TUSD officials said Arizona Department of Education representatives paid a surprise visit to one of these culturally relevant classes and asked the district for several documents.

TUSD Superintendent H.T. Sanchez issued a statement a few minutes ago responding to the state law violation news.

We are reviewing the information sent by the ADE today. Back in early December, I asked for a meeting from the outgoing Superintendent of Public Instruction regarding his concerns, but so far that has not happened.

The state of Arizona has repeatedly attempted to intervene in the districts active desegregation case for the stated purpose of controlling the district’s implementation of federal court-mandated curriculum. These courses were developed specifically under the court order. That order—the Unitary Status Plan—requires us to develop and implement culturally relevant courses taught from both the Mexican American and African American perspectives.

A few weeks ago, a federal appellate court again rejected the state’s effort to intervene in the desegregation case.

This threatened enforcement proceeding is nothing more than an attempt to circumvent the federal court orders denying the State’s intervention. It seeks to undermine our compliance with the curriculum mandates of the Unitary Status Plan.

I look forward to sitting down with in-coming Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas when she takes office later this month. During the election Ms. Douglas emphasized local control for curriculum decisions and we are eager to work with her as we continue to satisfy both state and federal law.

Now, it’ll be up to Superintendent of Public Instruction-elect Diane Douglas to decide whether she’ll pursue the violation order against TUSD or not.

  1. AS USUAL….the TUSD idiots have tried to put one over.. and got caught.. Talk about RACISTS…and Yeah.. im of Mexican descent.. however, LEGALLY. I wont vote for ONE dime for TUSD, not one, shut them down.. Enough of this RACIALLY divided Curriculum!

  2. Dude.. theyve been CAUGHT teaching RACIST (against white people I might add) dogma IN the classrooms….what PRAY tell do you need to prove it????? They were CAUGHT…on Camera..!!

  3. They were caught telling the truth about what happened to minorities in this country and that makes people like Huppenthal/Thucydides/Falcon9 very uncomfortable, because it conflicts with their sanitized mythology.

  4. “National Council of La Raza succeeded in raking in over $15.2 million in federal grants last year alone, of which $7.9 million was in U.S. Department of Education grants for Charter Schools, and undisclosed amounts were for get-out-the-vote efforts supporting La Raza political positions.

The Council of La Raza succeeded in having itself added to congressional hearings by Republican House and Senate leaders. And an anonymous senator even gave the Council of La Raza an extra $4 million in earmarked taxpayer money, supposedly for “housing reform,” while La Raza continues to lobby the Senate for virtual open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens.”

Go ahead and ignore and dispute the facts. It’s easy to see who is lying.

  5. And lest we forget, it was H.T. Sanchez and TUSD Board President Adelita Grijlava who conferenced with communists, radical separatists and even a known domestic terrorist to determine the future of your children.

La Comune de Tucson is thriving.

  6. Teaching racist what? How ignorant should we allow students to be?#@! Be realistic. The US is no longer a superpower and hasn’t been for a long time. We are behind in so many areas it is embarrassing. There is absolutely nothing wrong with teaching history. Huppenthal is a racist as evidenced by his blog posts under various pseudonyms. Another embarrassment for the state. I guess ya’ll believe that those that refused to support our current president and demanded his annihilation are also guilty of treason? Maybe you’d rather they teach history like the do in TX – slavery was voluntary, etc. This is the reason that we’ve lost control of our country and our lives. We think ignorance of things is a good thing and many of the comments above are evidence of that.

  7. Mickie, you say there is nothing wrong with teaching history, right?

Is there something wrong with telling lies?

You yourself go on to claim that in Texas slavery is taught as being voluntary… That is a whopper of a lie! The truth? Texas tried to introduce textbooks that stated slavery was voluntarily ended by the south, not that slavery was voluntary! I think you’ve just lost some credibility.

On TUSD MAS program… Elements of the courses should probably be integrated into standard teaching materials but the most important thing to teach our kids are proper research techniques, reading comprehension and how to check sources and vet their text books. I think Mickie would have benefited from this educational approach….

  8. Black history and hispanic history are relevant topics when discussing and learning about American history. The last thing we need is for kids to be taught a sanitized white conservative substitute for accurate history. The law that Brewer signed is one that attempts to omit those parts of history that don’t conform to the white conservative narrative.

  9. Everyone knows it was Santa Ana’s opression that started the Mexican-American War.
America prevailed, conquered Mexico and then gave half back.

  10. This isn’t even about what happened in the past. Teaching kids to resent their country, the greatest on Earth, because of their DNA ties to another place is wrong. This is about kids learning to hate America, despise white people, and believe the US should surrender territory to Mexico. We shouldn’t have to worry about our kids being radicalized in public school, but welcome to the vision of La Raza and the rest of the radical left. No more playing games, fire them, take the money, do what needs to be done to root out this threat.

  11. Sorry, its not about any of that 3AzPeaches. Its about a small group of elderly caucasion folks who are scared to death that the ever-shrinking tiny island that they are standing on is about to be inundated by people of different cultures and different histories and a number of different colors. And demographically, that is what’s happening. What doesn’t have to happen is the fear of that change. Fear is the motivator behind much of the hatred and the vitriol that comes out against Mexican American Studies and programs like it that try to teach a different standpoint on history TO white folks and others that they would never otherwise know. Forgive me for thinking that this what education SHOULD be about….opening kids eyes to something that they might otherwise never know or think about….

  12. What in the world makes anyone believe that “despising people of ANY ethnicity” comes from learning history and literature from all of the diverse perspectives and talented minds that belong to the human race…TV spreads hate just fine. This is about relevant teaching that engages and retains students so that they graduate. Oh but that would cause a problem wouldn’t it? Too many minorities graduating and elevating themselves…who will wash the cars and clean the houses? The cost of an education in Arizona for a minority should be free…just like it is for any of citizen of the United States of America. It must not come at the price of self-knowledge, self-worth, and integrity. Arizona is where scared old republicans come to die…and die they will….sooner or later….and change will come. Huppenthal….the ADE…..ridiculous and racist politics and procedures will not halt your demise and subsequent re-education. You cannot stop the truth…..or the future.

  13. And you can’t change history, only cover it up like all the stupid redneck Republicans want our educators to do…and to all those nasty comments above, GuiseppeKnows, Michael H Gottesman. What, Again, etc…they should be ashamed of themselves and what their ancestors did in this country. What a bunch of racists!! But only in America! I agree with Tucson Teacher & RobinS, but must add to all you scared White Republicans: SHUT THE F**K UP… you are all a bunch of cry babies…IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, THEN WHY DON’T YOU WHITE EUROPEANS GO BACK TO EUROPE WHERE YOU CAME FROM!!! I AM A WHITE ANGLO SAXON PROTESTANT! and I am proud to be living in this DIVERSE wonderful country of ours, until I read all this crap from you White Supremacists A**holes!!!! WHAT ARE YOU SO AFRAID OF? THAT THE BROWN MAN WILL RISE UP? Well, too late he did, Pres. Obama & got elected the 2nd term…hahahah, you big douchebag sore losers!

  14. Sorry Michael H Gottesman, I erroneously listed you in my previous message as one of the bad guys, but you are not! I agree with your, “Raving and ranting show “GuiseppeKnows” nothing” comment on GuiseppeKnows comments above…he knows NOTHING! He is a bona fide douchebag!
