So, we can all generally agree that Ted Nugent said some stupid things earlier this week. We can probably also agree that we’d prefer Uncle Ted not actually be our uncle, considering his complicated past and tendency to say generally dumb and often violent things.

However, trying to get him kicked off the bill of the Pima County Fair this week, like former state representative Phil Lopes is doing is a colossal waste of time.

If you don’t like that he’s performing, don’t go. It’s really that simple. Who is going to get hurt in the transaction? Not Nugent, who will just move on the next paycheck and will not likely see the light regarding his ridiculous rhetoric. Instead, it’ll screw over the Fair itself, since they will have to wade into some political fray that doesn’t have all that much to do with the show itself. Let’s not do what engage in the general lefty plan of action, jumping to smash down language we don’t like. We give Nugent too much credit by wasting our time.

Go see Boyz II Men instead. Ride a few rides. Have a good time and give Nugent his proper place in American culture, as a generally forgettable sideshow with one notable song.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. O BOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO typical media whining liberal, Ted stepped on your phoney messiah and you can’t take it. Nugent is double the musician of the Boyz
    hip hop crap.
    Go write kidde books.

  2. O BOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO typical right wing nut job, Ted Nugent crapped his pants to avoid the draft and you can’t take it. Nugent is half the musician of the Boyz
    hip hop crap.
    Go read kidde books.

  3. I think this may be the first time Dan Gibson had something rational to say. If you don’t like Ted Nugent or his opinion, don’t patronize him. Don’t listen to him. Don’t talk about him. We have the freedom to choose. Let’s not let some nimby nanny-statist decide what is right or wrong for us.

  4. I have no idea what Ted Nugent said and I don’t think I really care, not about that nor whether or not he’s at the fair. Judging by previous comments, am guessing it had to do with politics? Last I checked, politics and music are not related industries.

But hey, at least I’ve heard of HIM. Not bad considering his heyday was quite before my time, unlike that John Roberts bloke… who?

  5. If his comments were so bad why hasn’t the NRA or Romney said anything to distance themselves from him? Could it be that they actually embrace his stance?

  6. We all have a right to free speach,, we might not agree to what is being said but at least we live in a country that allows us to do so. Now mind you be carefull what is said because if there is a tainted past there then it will come back to bite ya. As far as what a old man says remember people it is what it is……party on!

  7. Wow!!! Are we all so scared of OUR government that everything we say is a threat to them?? What happened to OUR freedom of speech rights? Who cares what his political beliefs are, this is America………………..right?!?

  8. Hell he didnt say anything that alot of us arent thinking! Sometimes the truth hurts…. I will be at the fair on Sat the 28th and yes to See Terrible Uncle Ted. Wish we had more people with the balls to speak up and exercise their rights.

  9. one notable song???how old are you??? or are you just stoopid????ted nugent rocks and obama sucks!!!thats all

  10. What?? Trying to stop Ted Nugent from performing at a fair???? What a bunch of whiny babies! Our grandparents would have backhanded us and told us to grow up and stop this whiny “he makes my feelings feel bad” toxic glurge that seems to be permeating the very fabric of this great country. If you don’t like him, don’t go! The last time I checked, this was a free country – not a dictatorship. Now, everyone pull up those big boy and big girl pants and try to play nice once again…

  11. A night out watching an ignorant redneck with mediocre guitar skills? Thank you, no.

I do find it amusing (though not surprising) that he folded up like a cheap lawn chair after his interview with the secret service.

Ignore him like the irrelevant has-been he is.

  12. I don’t care what nugents political stance is. But when he comes out with his braveheart speech and makes it sound like he’s a red blooded brave american, I take exception. I’m a vietnam vet and people should see him for what he is a typical right wing cowardly draft dodging steamy pile of shit and no one should give him a second thought.

  13. Dumb ahole with the worst song ever(catscratch fever) but, this is America and dumb ahole speech is protected. I might have to go to this tweekerfest just for laughs.

  14. Classy Ted Nugent quote I heard in 1974 when a lady had a baby at the Ozark festival in Missouri. “I have never had a baby before, but I took a shit once that felt like I was having one.” To 100,000 or so in the crowd. Thought he was a jerk then, still do.

  15. Dan,
What are you guys afraid of? Patriotism comes in all shapes and forms. Is a jerk who is proud of America any worse then a Councilman who is equally as proud? As far as caving in for the Secret Service, I’ll bet anyone of them would love to go hunting or shooting with the Nuge.

  16. What is truly revealing is the hypocrisy we see from right wing blowhards who went ballistic back in 2003 when the Dixie Chicks said they were “ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.” Dixie Chicks were boycotted and sent death threats. So where is the outrage from these “patriotic” Americans now that this repulsive, no-talent Nugent character has repeatedly and vulgarly condemened and threatened President Obama by name?

  17. I actually heard what nugent said, and he didnt threaten pres. Osama. As usual he told the truth about Osamas shredding of our constitution and erosion of our freedoms and the appointment of Osamas communist czars. As for the chicken dicks, I mean dixie chicks, they bashed the pres in an to a foriegn country. Ted was speaking to patriotic americans who were celebrating and defending our 1st and 2nd amendment freedoms. Big difference. Standing up for freedom and our constitutional form of government pisses off the liberals, just like trashing american values and our constitution pisses off conservatives.

  18. Everyone is acting like this is the first thing he’s ever said. But let’s run down the highlights, shall we?:

“Apartheid isn’t that cut and dry. All men are not created equal. The preponderance of South Africa is a different breed of man … They still put bones in their noses, they still walk around naked, they wipe their butts with their hands …These are different people. You give ’em toothpaste, they fucking eat it”- Detroit Free Press Interview, 1990.

““I use the word n—-r a lot because I hang around with a lot of n—-rs”- Same interview.

“Foreigners are assholes; foreigners are scum; I don’t like ‘em; I don’t want ‘em in this country; I don’t want ‘em selling me doughnuts; I don’t want ‘em pumping my gas; I don’t want ‘em downwind of my life-OK? So anyhow-and I’m dead serious…”- DJing on WIFR FM in Detroit, 1992.

“I’ll show you some security and I’ll show you some peace: Nagasaki and Hiroshima. You fuck with us and we’ll fucking melt you.”-NY Times interview, 2005.

[While literally brandishing two machine guns on stage.] ” Obama, he’s a piece of shit. I told him to suck on my machine gun…hey Hillary, why don’t you ride this into the sunset, you worthless bitch.”

He’s been caught having sex with underage girls multiple times, including one he had legal guardianship over. Courtney Love alleges that he raped her when she was 12 years old.

Oh yeah, and the speech that got him in trouble with the secret service? Here’s the rest of what he said, which puts that line that’s been being quoted in better context: “If the coyote’s in your living room pissing on your couch, it’s not the coyote’s fault. It’s your fault for not shooting him…We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November. Any questions?” That is, in fact, a call for violence against liberals, one that makes inviting him to play in Tucson especially distasteful.

Of course he has a right to free speech. So does David Duke. That doesn’t mean we can’t protest him being here. Our right to call him a pathetic, despicable, miserable racist son of a bitch is equally protected.

  19. Has-been is right….Mr. Tuff guy wants his country back. All his crap is coming out of the wrong end of his body. What a redneck dimwit.

  20. Its a stroke of genius on the fair’s part. Get all the TP’ers at there on one day so normal people can enjoy themselves on the others.

  21. I can’t believe that this story is about former State Rep. Phil Lopes trying to push his weight to have Ted Nugent removed from the bill and I am the first commenter to mention Phil Lopes.

This is the story, that once again, a Grijalva ally wants to quell freedom of speech rather than creatively dealing with Nugent’s celebrity in Pima County.

I suggested that a whole bunch of people show up to the concert wearing their Obama T-shirts. Nugent should have the good sense to speak appropriately and if he doesn’t, you make an example of his bad behavior rather than censor it Mr. Lopes.

  22. More power to free speach and the Dixie Chicks. Let him sing and have his opinion. Or are you afraid he might have valuable points?

I may go just to see the goof ball protesters and the gun toters.

  23. You can expect gun nuts to say stupid things. Just look at the comments section after any article mentioning guns. You should not hold Nugent to a higher standard just because he can also play a guitar. Of course, some people are so stupid they need a gun to defend their words. They cannot do it with intellect. Or, maybe it is just the voices…

  24. Lopes might make for something to mash in a wango tango mosh pit…
Keep politics out of peoples fun dammit.

  25. The difference between theodorenugent and “hanoi jane?”
    Jane went to vietnam.

  26. Sorry Allen Bartlett but you have to specify…….you see Hanoi Jane went to North Vietnam…..hence “Hanoi Jane” for which she apologized twice but I doubt anyone who was incountry would accept……its one thing to try and get out of going and another to give aide and comfort to the enemy…….
