The Rhino Pub, a bar and restaurant at 1118 E. Sixth St., has closed.
The building has changed hands a number of times in recent years, housing Victory Bar, Belushe’s and Gooch’s Grill before returning as the Rhino Pub—the same name it operated as starting back in the late-’80s—last fall.
The building has been repainted, and I hear another sports bar might make a go of it there. A liquor license application has been filed, but the contact phone number on the application has been disconnected, so I have no idea what’s next for the location.
As a side note, have you ever heard that the building in question is rumored to be haunted? Weird.

Once upon a time, long ago, when it was called The Oasis and 18-year-old kids could get served cold beer, Tim Vanderpool was my bartender!
Tight! The primordial pool of Tucson Weekly talent revealed!
I used to be around 18 about 25 years ago and I remember playing in dart tournaments and getting hammered at the Oasis. That is when a friend of mine (Marty Huff) owned it.
Part of the building was an alleyway that separated two buildings. A woman was murdered in the alleyway (Don’t know what year). There have been claims that the building is haunted. I talked to a manager there when it was Gooch’s and he said he would hear weird voices and sounds late at night and believed it was haunted.
Too many alternatives (Che’s, Sky Bar, O’Malley’s) too few students right now.
Wrong Wrong & Wrong! The Oasis was located down the street where Sabor de Mexico is now but what is true is that Tim Vanderpool would serve anyone!!
I’m wondering if what’s haunting that building is the ghost of Jim Nintzel’s sobriety.
Bob, I think that Sabor de Mexico occupies what was half of the old Oasis and the Rhino Pub occupies the other half. Or at least that what it looks like to me on my Google street view, although they have Belushi’s in the photo, so maybe the layout has changed since then and I’m misremembering. It was a long time and mas cervezas ago. Maybe we can get Trevor Hare to settle it?
Wherever we were, Marty Huff ran a fun bar back in the day. I can still remember these words, after last call and the locking of the doors: “Beer’s on me, as long as it’s tap!”
The tall part of the building housing the Rhino pub was a rental unit, then just to the east was the Oasis, where I would wake up many mornings in a puddle of beer (ah those college days). Mr Friel is more addled than I! Where the Sabor is used to be was the spot deli!
Spot Deli Is now Zacary’s. I think Jim is right. It was half Sabor & half Rhino. Screw it; Lets meet @ Pucu Pucu & get this figured out!
Or make that Puku Puku!
I think we’ll have to settle for Bob Dobb’s, Skinny Bob!
