The Arizona Republic’s Laurie Roberts posted this update on the effort to recall Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio earlier today, writing that activist group Respect Arizona has run out of money less than two weeks after boasting that they had raised more than 120,000 signatures in their recall effort.

From azcentral.com:

Lilia Alvarez, campaign manager of the Arpaio recall, confirmed the campaign is out of money and can no longer pay petition circulators. Instead, Respect Arizona will rely on volunteers to get to the promised land of 335,317 valid signatures by May 30.

Alvarez remains optimistic that it can be done.

“Money isn’t really the answer,” she said. “It’s whether people are hungry for change or not.”

Others, however, say the lack of cash is a major setback. One Democratic strategist says “recall fatique” has set in among donors and that young Arizonans who campaigned against him last year now have moved on to Phoenix City Council races.

“Joe Arpaio is passé and so is any effort to get him out of office,” said Democratic strategist Mario Diaz.

Interestingly, Arpaio seems to have actually made an effort in recent months to keep himself out of the spotlight (for him at least, considering that he didn’t appear to do a victory lap after Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office busted a Phoenix-area fast food chain for illegal hiring practices) — though his recent broken arm may have something to do with that.

  1. Why do you need money if it is a popular opinion? Sounds like they are having to work pretty hard to get enough people to agree that he is not wanted.

  2. It was a stupid idea anyway. Why would they want to recall the most effective sheriff in America?

  3. Because he IS The Most Effective Sheriff in America, and the Left Hates Law Enforcement…. unless it’s Obama’s Private Security Force AKA …DHS.

  4. Nothing that Joe Arpaio does is constitutional, or even intelligent. He’s nothing like Richard Mack, the more intelligent voice for federal nullification.

Arpaio made his name by prosecuting victimless crime “offenses” that lack both injury and intent to injure, while failing to pursue actual crimes with a victim. It just shows how stupid the Arizona Libertarian Party is that their less intelligent members are supporting Arpaio in this. Let’s recap: Joe’s $50M prostitution sting is both socially intolerant and fiscally wasteful (anti-liberty). Joe’s persecution of victimless crimes like drug use is similar (and over 60% of the people in his desert gulag are there for victimless crimes –also anti-liberty). Joe’s endless “papers please” mentality which makes America resemble Germany in the 1930s, and his persecution of brown-skinned people as possible “illegals” is socially intolerant (also anti-liberty). The moron (Eric Dondero) that Ron Paul fired (for very good cause) is heading up the campaign to defend Joe Arpaio, by interfering with people who are signing the recall petition (calling the police on them and threatening potential petition signers, even though they are simply exercising their First Amendment rights). Joe Arpaio should be recalled, but if Arizonans had any knowledge of the common law, or economics, he wouldn’t have ever been elected anyway. The Democrats are the heroes in this case, but that stops whenever they open their stupid mouths in opposition to gun rights.

  5. I was born and raised in Arizona. I just recently retired and moved elsewhere so I am well aware of what kind of sheriff Joe Arpaio is. It is really too bad that America doesn’t have more sheriffs like him. Arizona is a hard state. The people that live there are tough folks. The good ones are tough, thick skinned and don’t see much gray in what is right or what is wrong. The same with laws. If you break one……..then you should visit Joe’s tent city or worse. Keep your nose clean and you never have to meet him. Simple, to the point and very effective. Those of you who have an opinion that differs……….you should live in Arizona with the illegals, their street gangs, the drunk drivers, etc. I promise you, you will learn to love Joe Arpaio very quickly. Those who oppose him are generally bleeding hearts for the illegals that Arizonans have to pay millions of dollars to feed, clothe, medicate and educate while watching their own children do without. Enough said.

  6. Ha, ha, ha…it appears the Hispanic pro-illegal aliens are out of money to push their agenda of getting rid of the Sheriff who follows the laws. These people don’t care that everyday there is a victim here in Arizona of ID theft, Social Security numbers stolen by illegal aliens. Sheriff Joe is following immigration laws, and the Mexicans hate that, they want all their fellow illegal aliens free to continue their life of crime. MORE power to Sheriff JOE!

  7. I guess I’ll have to do more research on this “Respect Arizona” and why they think they have the right to go against the voters of Arizona. He was elected fair and square, but these people don’t want him in office because he actually does up hold the laws. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the signatures on their recall list are Hispanic names and they cater to the Hispanic population to get the vote out, but since their plan didn’t work to get rid of the Sheriff, it’s time for plan two. Nothing respectful about “Respect Arizona” they don’t respect the voters!!!

  8. What is wrong with you people? Putting people WHO ARE NOT EVEN CONVICTED in tents that are 145 degrees inside is humane? If you think so, you have serious issues. I would call them sociopathic ones actually. There will never come a day I would ever lose my sense of compassion for humanity and EVER say that is justified. This ignorant OPENLY sadistic man is a torturer of human beings. That’s right, they are HUMAN BEINGS even if they were convicted, BUT THEY ARE NOT…Many are waiting trial. WAKE UP!

  9. An_Arizona_Libertarian_Republican is 100% right. While Eric Dondero (a pro-military-but-otherwise-mercenary petition circulator) was attempting to interfere with the recall petition, he actually hired Darryl Bonner (a strictly mercenary petition circulator) to create commotions in front of public library sidewalks where the recall petition was being circulated. They did this intending to have law enforcement called, hoping that law enforcement would fail to see who was guilty of initiating the commotion, and disallow ALL speech in front of the Libraries. By more egregiously bullying the recall petitioners before the police arrived, and then pretending to simply wish to “get their opposing view heard,” such brownshirts were able to effectively silence the debate.

Dondero is a 4’11” white guy with a brown moustache. The sides of the moustache are usually slightly shorter than the middle, because he likes to imitate the style of Adolf Hitler, with a narrow moustache. When he’s acting as an agent provocateur in public, he realizes that he can’t get away with this, so he grows the sides out. Years ago, Dondero became an admirer of racist “Oi” punk rock, and misinterpreted the philosophy of Herbert Spencer to be in favor of collectivist social darwinism (whereby the racially superior majority imposes their will on the racially inferior minority). He then found the Libertarian Party, and misinterpreted their philosophy as an interim step to white supremacy. He finally settled on the Bush-era Republican Party as a viable Party for advancing institutionalized racism. His diminutive stature results in a grotesque “small man overcompensation” belligerence that is common when anyone defends a logical alternative to his insane philosophical beliefs.

By trying to shut down ALL SPEECH outside of Maricopa’s libraries, Dondero is actually acting against republican principles AND lower-level democratic principles. Those who claim to be in favor of the democratic process and republicanism have to ignore this fact, if they wish to claim the recall petition isn’t a part of the democratic process, and is therefore hypocritical. Claiming otherwise is anti-Republican because it is anti-free-speech, anti-Republican because it is anti-electoral-participation, and anti-Republican because it favors getting rid of a means of holding law enforcement to their oaths to uphold the constitution, in favor of individual rights protected by the Bill of Rights.

Joe Arpaio HIRED Eric Dondero to run this anti-democratic, belligerent blocking campaign.

Now, what would Joe Arpaio have to lose if people knew the full story I’ve written here? Do they want a Sheriff who will bully them if they decide to stand in front of a public library and hand out information to the public? That’s a very basic foundation of our republican system: the ability to petition your government (local, state, or federal) for a redress of grievances. Some day, you might just want to use that ability yourself.

It would be nice if paid agents provocateurs working for Joe Arpaio hadn’t eliminated that basic right, along with the right to due process and habeas corpus that they have already so horribly assaulted and violated.

It’s time for the people of Arizona to wake up and smell what they’re shoveling.

  10. leave joe alone , we need a sherriff like him in every state, with joe i know he has my back, so thanks joe. and to all the illegals that was hopping to recall him,,boo hoo
