Apparently, Jessica Simpson’s homage to Demi Moore on the cover of ELLE magazine was slightly too scandalous for the manager of the Safeway at Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway, so they put a poorly crafted cardboard blockade to deter young, easily impressionable eyes. Then, since everyone loves to kick a state while it’s down, someone sent the above photo to female-centric snark blog Jezebel. Super.

We spoke with spokeswoman for Safeway who said that this particular store made the decision to cover the magazine after it received multiple complaints from mothers with young children. She also said that other Safeway locations in the area had not received any complaints. She said the company tries to be sensitive to the complaints of their customers but does not have an official corporate policy on blocking magazine covers. Instead, those decisions are left up to the discretion of store managers.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. I find nothing attractive about this photo of Jessica Simpson who obviously gained a tremendous amount of weight during her pregnancy & looks like she is having at least twins!!! I think Demi’s photo was much more tasteful but I dont enjoy seeing photos of women who are so VERY pregnant!!!

  2. Whether modesty is a virtue or Jessica Simpson appears to have gained a lot of weight or whatever else anyone has to say about her naked image on the cover of a magazine, will someone please tell me when it became acceptale to ignore the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, which is supposed to allow everyone an equal opportunity to express themselves? I believe it is referred to as something like freedom of speech. Sound familiar anyone? The principles and beliefs this country was supposed to be founded on and which many have died defending seem to be slipping farther and farther into oblivion. This is obvious by the actions and comments regarding this subject. Wake up people and pay attention to what is going on. Next week it may be your comment that some self proclaimed judger of what is and isn’t appropriate opposes.

  3. I wouldn’t call this coverage “kicking a state when it’s down”; it’s just reinforcing the deservedly negative image our lawmakers in Phoenix and our governor have created for Arizona. It’s too bad Pima County can’t remain above the fray, at least in the public mind, but the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords effectively eliminated that possibility. And I wouldn’t call Jezebel a female centric snark blog. It’s a feminist political blog. It’s your description of it that’s snarky.

  4. This cracks me up, I saw this same sign over this rag at the Safeway on Golf Links and Harrison. The woman in line behind me commented that she would rather her child see this pic than read the gossip crap our society buys in these same rags in check out lines. Couldn’t agree with her more. Prudes are far uglier than a pregnant Jessica Simpson. WOW…

  5. What does a negative image of lawmakers in Phoenix have to do with naivety in a Tucson Safeway…..the store manager must be a little dull in the grey matter when he could have just moved the mag back a couple of shelves…..????? No one in N.Y. or anywhere else could care less…..Thou dost protest too much about stupid politicians….

  6. It actually had nothing to do with scandal. They covered it up because she is a fat slob, and they didn’t want people losing their appetites while shopping for food.

    Smart business play.

  7. I don’t really care for Jessica Simpson, but it’s a beautiful photo.

We live in a state of prudes.

  8. I understand Rick “Frothy Mix” Santorum, if elected, will protect us from from photos of ALL naked women…fat, thin, pregnant, modest, or whatever…

Dan is wrong, only in that Jezebel isn’t funny enough to be snarky. I wouldn’t call it a political blog – how is an article about chatting with dina lohan political? Just entertainment from feminist perspective.
