Choice No. 1 has my vote in the state quarter design contest. I think you should vote for it as well.
Nintzel likes No. 2 (as you can read about in The Range when the issue’s online here shortly), but I think it’s too busy. As journalists, we both have very strong feelings about currency design. I don’t think the obverse side of our coin needs to represent every Arizona biome. Simplicity is best, no?
No. 3 is OK; I put it ahead of No. 2. I would have been cool with just a saguaro.
Nos. 4 and 5 are bor-ing!
This article appears in Apr 12-18, 2007.

Personally Saxon, I think quarter designs 1 through 3 are bor-ring! Let’s give some credit to the designs that actually stray away from the oh-so typical representation of a saguaro cactus. Seriously, do we NEED any more cacti in our lives? I’d rather spice it up a little with design No. 4 and leave the cactus out of the picture completely.
Kelli, I don’t think anyone in the history of humankind has been more wrong about something, and I doubt anyone ever will be. If our quarter ends up being the laughingstock of the nation, then we’ll both know who to blame.
Saguaros make everything better.
They’re like monkeys on silver age DC Comic Books.
But about the quarters.
#1 is okay. Screw #4. I’m sort of partial to #5 if just to have a better coin with Native Americans on it.
But I don’t feel very strongly about any of ’em.
