While the Tucson Weekly is still holding on to its semi-official tenative endorsement of Al Melvin for the Republican nomination in the 2014 guberatorial race, Christine Jones is racing up our GOP candidate power poll based on the above video, where the former GoDaddy attorney seems to misunderstand nearly everything about Arizona politics and geography in one fell swoop.

Things I learned from the video, shot at some sort of fundraiser for Arpaio at Phoenix’s Standup Live (so maybe these are jokes…please tell me these are supposed to be jokes):

1. Christine Jones is willing to show up at a fundraiser for Joe Arpaio.

2. Christine Jones believes everyone in Arizona loves Joe Arpaio.

3. When Christine Jones is referring to things “that Sheriff Joe does that nobody knows about,” she’s meaning positive things like “put[ting] out water so people won’t die coming across the Rio Grande,” and not treating prisoners like subhumans or breaking civil rights laws. (FYI, I’m pretty sure he’s not putting water out for immigrants anywhere, ever.)

4. Christine Jones believes the Rio Grande is in Arizona. (It’s not.)

5. Christine Jones believes that 50 percent of Arpaio’s “force” is Hispanic. (Turns out it’s 24 percent.)

6. Christine Jones believes Arpaio “acts with integrity and honesty.”

7. She thinks it’s a good idea to sing a song from Wicked in a public place, even though she doesn’t really know the lyrics and there’s barely a connection to the point she’s seemingly trying to make.

Not every public appearance is going to be of this caliber, surely, but Christine Jones, you’re someone we’re going to keep our eyes on, because if you keep this up, you could push Cap’n Melvin from the top of our endorsement list.

The editor of the Tucson Weekly. I have no idea how I got here.

  1. Why do so many tea-chugging conservative political wannabes appear to pride themselves on being completely ignorant about U.S. history, geography, and our Democratic Republic system of governance?

  2. Hey Dan! Keep looking at Capt Melvin. The best candidate so far. The last thing we need is a prima donna who thinks running for an office is just one big joke. She is relying on her money and dirty campaigning to win. Arizonans, let’s show her it won’t work with us.

  3. The Republicans have destroy AZ and we need a governor who cares about rebuilt the state, bringing in new businesses( and not just make overseas trips, wasting Tax Payers money), we jobs, that pay a decent standard of living, and bring back the rights the Repubicans have taken away. We need to restore AZ fast.
So voters, wise up and vote out the Tea Party and the Republicans. We know what their mission is in this state and nation. DESTRUCTION

  4. BTW, I hear a rumor Saturday night at a party, That Jan Brewer was being looked at for a Presidential Run in 2016, we all need to support her.

  5. From Sam’s fingertips to the ears of the Almighty! The thought of Brewer at a debate is too wonderful for words. She’d make Rick Perry look like the keynote speaker at a Phi Beta Kappa convention. Run, Jan, run!

  6. Let’s see how she debates before making pre-judgments. Term Limits – be afraid government workers – be very afraid.

  7. To Sam Smith, education, education, education. I can tell you missed more than a few days of school. To ALL: if you attend regularly and pay attention in school you will be rewarded with a good paying and not have build up the forearm muscles needed to keep your handout.

  8. We know where the Left went and it not good . It is about time for a conservative to get into office and bring this country and state back to its greatness.

  9. Dan; If I were Joe Arpaio I would not take you seriously as a journalist. I sincerely doubt Christine Jones does either. I would operate on the assumption that like Denver and Boulder, Arizona has Phoenix and Tucson as bastions of liberal thought, bias and dissemination. I don’t believe you act with integrity and honesty given your propensity to make judgments based on your personal opinion.

  10. “Why do so many tea-chugging conservative political wannabes appear to pride themselves on being completely ignorant about U.S. history, geography, and our Democratic Republic system of governance?”

…….Oh, you mean like Obamas 57 states, “corpsemen”, and all the other wonderful illustrations of his staggering intellect??

  11. Sam Smith…that was a painful read to say the least. Your opinion must be held in the highest esteem with such mastery of the English language…jk!

  12. I happen to be a person who lives in Arizona and I happen to like Sheriff Arpio and so do the majority of voters, yes I said voters, because he just keeps on getting voted into office. The people who can’t vote are illegal aliens (who have no rights here but they think they should) and criminals who have had their voter rights taken away, thank God). And guys, you are supposedly in college or is it grade school, cause I can’t tell with all of the spelling errors, grammatical errors and words left out of sentences to where they don’t make a whole lot of sense. Remember, colleges are not always correct in their leftist ideas, just because they are educated! I don’t go around committing crimes so I don’t have to worry about Sheriff Joe.

  13. Hi Chris
Saw you’re add on TV this evening. Very cute but extremely shallow. We do not need another Jan wannabe in the Governors office.

  14. A woman so out of touch, because of her many bank accounts! We are in the bottom 6 in the USA in Education spending, but “we spend it more efficiently. Then why are 44 in the USA in ranking!!!! Because heaven forbid we change! Every other institution changes (medical care, card catalogues in libraries, agriculture, OMG even guying tickets for airports) but we still expect kids to sit read two chapters and answer question—and that is teaching. Giving homework and never grading it. I am a retired teacher for DOD for 33 years; I changed every year!

  15. Where on EARTH does she get her information?!? Joe Arpaio putting our water for Illegal Immigrants?!? 50% of the Sheriffs Office is Hispanic?!? This woman is even less well informed than Sarah Palin…

  16. Scott Smith did a lot for Mesa. I have lived here for 12 yrs and I see our tax dollars at work here everyday. Can the rest of you say that anyone else running can prove what they are saying about themselves. Scott Smith can. I believe he is the best candidate and Jan Brewer has endorsed him.
