I’ve got a few things to say about the RTA election fiasco that I’ll get to soon, but first I’d like to post this odd letter that editor Jimmy Boegle and I got from political gadfly John Kromko back on Monday, April 13:

From: J. Kromko
Sent: Monday, April 13, 2009 8:53 AM
To: Jimmy Boegle; Jim Nintzel
Subject: penance

It’s too soon to be certain.

But the way things are going with the ballots, it isn’t too soon to
start talking about what penance would be appropriate for you two.

It may not be necessary, as I said, but just to be prepared.

What would you suggest would be fair?

So, John … how does that shit taco taste?

  1. So I was showing somebody else this link (expanding your readership for brighter moments like these) and I realized that Kromko’s letter actually hedges its bet. He even says “it’s too soon to be certain”. He’s not premature.

So the next question is “What is the point of doing a recount if there’s no attempts to evaluate the ballots as evidence?” This exercise included no forensics and no check of the precinct totals against the poll tape totals.

Why go through all the trouble without a rudimentary check for authenticity? Knowing hard-drives were illegally abducted without a paper trail from the Pima County vault, why would there not be sufficient cause to check ballot paper stock, ink splashes and precinct snapshots?

Knowing that part of the purpose of this exercise was to provide ammo for wanna-be journalists to ridicule nay-sayers, why not provide all the ammo necessary for folks like Nintzel to present such brilliant commentary?
