Wayne LaPierre, if nothing else, is a dedicated spokesman for his organization, the National Rifle Association. He doesn’t bend, give in, or sway from his pro-gun beliefs ever, and at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, DC yesterday, he gave another impassioned speech that mentioned the events of January 8th.
“If Tucson taught us anything it taught us this: Government failed,” LaPierre said. “And when they tell you that a ban on assault weapons can make you safer, don’t you buy it, not one second, because it’s a lie. Their laws don’t work, their lies aren’t true. By its laws and lies and lack of enforcement, government policies are getting us killed.”

Even if everyone in the crowd had had a gun, it would have taken a few seconds at least to realize what was happening, draw a gun, hopefully not be the next one shot, and take out Loughner. As fast as he was shooting, he still would have shot at least ten people. Not to mention all the people accidentally shot in the mayhem that would have ensued had all those hypothetical “heroes” started shooting too.
I do believe that very well trained (as in six-month intensive courses) citizens with guns can help reduce many kinds of violent crimes merely by their existence and the fear that creates in criminals’ minds that their next victim may fight back. However, in situations where a mentally ill person executes a well planned blitzkrieg style attack, the only real solution is prevention. A) Ensure that the mentally ill receive proper treatment. B) Far more thorough security checks before people can purchase guns. C) Requirements for extensive training – perhaps through the NRA and others – in gun safety and when – and when not – to use a gun for defense of self or others.

Who is calling for a ban on assault weapons or any weapons? The problem with out-of-touch leaders spouting this type of anti-government propaganda, it sounds like the ramblings of say – Jared Loughner.
