On Monday, there was a moment of silence in Congress to mourn the 49 LGBT young men and women who were killed in the Orlando mass shooting in the early hours of Sunday. At that moment, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives started to repeatedly chant, “Where’s the bill?”

The protest was against House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Republicans who refuse to support gun control legislation. They are guilty of continuing to allow killers, like the one who broke into Pulse nightclub, to purchase AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles and other weapons meant for a war zone.

According to Mother Jones, Ryan refused to acknowledge the protesters and instead tried to continue business as usual.

He even dismissed Rep. James Clyburn’s attempt to speak about the upcoming anniversary of the Charleston mass shooting, in which nine people were killed inside a historic black church on June 17, 2015.

Republicans and the anti-gun control movement, keep your moments of silence to yourselves, keep your “my thoughts are with the victims” to yourselves, keep your “guns don’t kill people” bullshit to yourselves.

As Mother Jones writes, the protest on Monday will very likely fall on deaf ears.

  1. Did you forget to report that three democrats walked out and interrupted the moment of silence for the victims?

If the killer does not represent all Muslims, why does he represent all gun owners?

49 people were slaughtered in a gun free bar zone.

One armed patron could have stopped it.

    So much for your laws.

Paris France yesterday. Two police officers were stabbed to death by an ISIS terrorist.

    Knives don’t kill people?

    Outlaw everything?

  2. Who said all gun owners are like this guy? I’d like to see a source, because right now all that is is specious bumper sticker logic. As is ‘outlaw everything?’

Mass killers pick places where someone they know is, or with lots of people, preferably densely packed, and confined even better. That correlates to gun free areas, but it’s not the cause. A bar with a no weapons policy is actually a great idea. Rambo fantasies serve no purpose except to stroke the ego of the person touting it. Though I suppose they help to up the arms race we live in today.

You want a fantasy? Ask yourself honestly, if you could live in a world with zero guns, I mean absolutely none, would you?

Knives, eh? If this guy had a knife instead, a lot fewer families would be burying their loved ones this week.

It’s long past time for the 2nd amendment to be replaced. The citizen militia doesn’t exist because we now have a standing army. Private citizens have no need for high capacity firearms. If you feel you do, I suggest reevaluating your life choices.

  3. A moment of silence shows respect. Your gun free zones and gun control laws do not stop shooters at all, just makes victims more vulnerable.

  4. Several good points. Too bad they fall on deaf ears. Those who hate guns will always hate guns. Period. I’m sure Tammy Danehy will have a lot to say about this in the near future.

  5. We’re all familiar with the talking points, gentlemen. But can any of you please explain the civilian need for semi-automatic rifles and extended clips? Or why the slightest hint of regulation sends shivers down your spine?
Do you really think the NRA has your best interest in mind? Fear is their lifeblood and they’re playing you like fiddles. They care about gun manufacturers, not you. And those manufacturers don’t care about you either, just your money. They sell to both sides at every opportunity. How can you possibly feel free when all your doing is shilling for corporate interests wrapped in the Constitution?

  6. Just for the record it’s a magazine not a clip. Allow me to comment on Obummers son in his exclusive private school with secret service agents standing outside his classroom. When Peabo, what, again and I were in school if it came down to it we had to settle a problem with our fists. I doubt young Mr. Obummer would have to do the same.

  7. Yes, where is the bill that would have allowed those innocent victims to defend themselves? Since concealed carry began spreading across this country in 1993, rapes are down 18,000 per year and murders are down 9,000 per year. That’s because there are 14 million more households with guns to defend themselves. Criminals know this because they all know stories of other criminals who have been shot.

He picked the PULSE because he knew they would be defenseless.

  8. “No Republicans, Moments of Silence Are Not Preventing Mass Shootings”…neither is one more useless, unenforceable, doing-it-just-to-pander gun control bill.

  9. !4,000 fewer rapes per year than in 1993. This is a talking point?

9,000 fewer murders per year than in 1993. This is a talking point?

14 million more homes with guns to defend themselves.

No, these are what is know as facts for consideration and thought.

  10. You’re a fool and borderline illiterate.
If you heroes-in-waiting weren’t such dishonest candy-asses, you could at least answer the question without consulting your latest copy of the NRA rag.
Why. Do. You. Need. Semi. Automatic. Rifles?
If just one of you had the stones to say “It feels good when I squeeze the trigger,” or, “I’m afraid Ali Baba is going to climb over my ocotillo fence,” then at least you’d be using your own words, instead of some lobbyist’s.

  11. Thanks for the compliments. By the looks of your posts you do it all the time. Why do you ask if someone NEEDS a semi automatic rifle? Nobody needs one. It’s a want. America is the land of the free…some people want to be free to smoke dope, some want the latest firearm technology. Some want cars that will go 200 mph when they know the speed limit is 75.

Using a middle eastern analogy, outlawing something is the camels nose under the tent. And we have seen how inadequate the government is when it comes to solving problems.

Some day a hope a firearm owner has the opportunity to save your life.

  12. If three shots of tequila makes most people drunk, why do they let us buy a whole bottle?

You can apply that thinking to so many things in America. We are blessed to have such technology and so many opportunities that others don’t.

Punishing the innocent will solve nothing. That’s a feel good, knee jerk reaction. Killers will find new ways to kill. That is the price of freedom. Don’t run from it. Run to it.

  13. Thanks for clearing that up! So none of you freedom fighters actually need one of these things? You just want them? Please forgive me, I thought I was at the adult table.
For the record, Dave, the first part of my comment was directed at Huppenthal, who has more than earned it. But if the shoe fits.
And thanks for being concerned for my welfare, however patronizing, but I’ll take a pass. The math works out much better when there are no guns around as opposed to one or more.

  14. What made you think you would be welcome at the adult table with the vulgar language, and insults? Who is Huppenthal?

Not patronizing and math doesn’t actually help. Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and never fired a shot.

  15. Same old, same old. I’m out. Keep your talking points. The gun industry thanks you. All this huffing and puffing and not one of you could come up with a more substantial argument than – “Because we want it.”
That piece of trash Omar Mateen wanted it. He got it. Lucky for him the NRA had his back.

  16. Peabo, Americans don’t need a substantial argument for anything. Unless forces are working to take away rights not given to the government.

Had the DHS folks not deleted terror watch lists, he may have been on a no fly list.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=deleted+terror+watch+lists&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Then I would have been in agreement…no guns….but now we have a history with partisan government employees in the IRS and their lists. They can go after whomever they want.

After the next election the winner may try to outlaw your rights. This thing blows both ways.

There are still tax payers in the medical profession that testified against Hillary Care in ’92 that continue to suffer through IRS audits.

  17. Peabo. Towards the top of this column I posted a comment. Reread it. I said that those who hate guns will always hate them and nothing anyone says will change that. You hate guns, fine. But don’t deny me my right to own one.

  18. Nope. Not going to let you get away with that one. You can’t frame the argument to suit your needs , no matter how much you’d like to. Nothing I wrote involved denying your right to own a gun. Or implied that I hated guns. But that’s the problem, isn’t it? The all-or-nothing mentality fueled by the NRA and gun manufacturers, where even the slightest mention of regulation is met with accusations of hate and cries of oppression. The slightest mention. And you call us hysterical? The black helicopters aren’t coming for your muzzle-loaders, or your semi-automatics either. Own your argument. If you’re cool with the NRA spending and receiving millions of dollars a day to make sure a piece of garbage like the Orlando shooter can purchase the killing machine of his choice without obstacles, accept it. Just don’t fool yourself into believing it’s those for freedom versus those against because it’s simply not true.
